After suffering a massive defeat against South Africa and India, Australia are all set to take on Sri Lanka at the same venue. The 14th game of the ICC ODI World Cup will be played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on 16th October from 2 pm. Just like Australia, Sri Lanka have suffered two losses in their first two matches.

Australia lost to South Africa by 134 runs. It was the biggest defeat for Australia in the World Cup. Batting first, South Africa managed to score 311 runs after a century from Quinton de Kock. Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc took two wickets each. The chase looked horrible from the Australian side, as they were reduced to 6 wickets on 70. Marnus Labuschagne (46) tried to take things further but Australia eventually got bowled out on 177.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka couldn’t defend a huge total of 344 runs against Pakistan. Batting first, Sri Lankan players, Kusal Mendis & Samarawickrama scored centuries to take their team past 300. Pakistani batters, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammed Rizwan also scored centuries in return to beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Sri Lanka had already lost their first game against South Africa by 102 runs.

Both teams faced each other back in June at Colombo. Australia won that game by 4 wickets. In the last game of the five-match ODI series, Sri Lanka set a target of 161 runs for Australia after Hazelwood and Cummins took 2 wickets each. Alex Carey (45*)  guarded the fort for Australia after they were reduced to 50 for the loss of 4 wickets. Sri Lanka won the series 3-2.

In the ODI World Cups, Australia have 8 wins in 11 games over Sri Lanka.

Australia Preview

For the first time since 1992, Australia have lost their first two games of the World Cup. This has put their plans in jeopardy. Their batting has been so poor in both games that they are yet to get past the 200-run mark. Davis Warner will open the innings with Mitchell Marsh. Both have a poor record against Sri Lanka. While Warner averages just above 35, Marsh has scored 64 runs in 4 games against Sri Lanka. Steve Smith is also riding in the same boat when it comes to Sri Lanka. His average is 38 against Sri Lanka. But he has been consistent against them. In 10 innings, Smith has 4 half-centuries against Lanka.

Marnus Labuschagne is currently leading the chart for Australia with his batting. He scored 46 runs in the last game. Though his average is just 23 against Sri Lanka, he will be the batter to look out for in this game. Besides Labuschagne is averaging at 55 in the last 10 games. A below-par performance from the middle order has been a headache for Australia. In two games, the Aussie middle-order has scored 36 runs losing 6 wickets. Though Maxwell is yet to find his feet, he is the only batter to have an average of more than 40 with more than 5 games against the Lankans.

Australian bowling unit is yet to perform under the captaincy of Cummins. Though Josh Hazelwood is the leading wicket-taker for Australia, Mitchell Starc will be the bowler to look out for. Starc has 27 wickets against Sri Lanka in 14 games at an average of 18.88. Leg spinner Adam Zampa has 1 wicket in the first two games. But his stats are better against Sri Lanka. With 10 wickets in 5 games, he can provide the spin assist that Australia has lacked so far.

Key Players: Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Sri Lanka Preview

Sri Lanka couldn’t manage to defend 344 runs in the second game even after scoring 300-plus runs in both. This clearly indicates that the bowling unit needs to buckle up. The batters has been doing a great job for Sri Lanka. Pathum Nissanka will be opening the innings with Kusal Perera. Nissanka scored a half-century in the first game. Sri Lanka might go ahead with Dimuth Karunaratne as Perera is not providing the expected start.

All eyes will be on Kusal Mendis who is currently playing at his peak. Perera has a century and a half-century in the last two games. He has scored 198 runs at a strike rate of 166. In the last 10 games, Mendis is averaging above 60. In fact, he was the player of the series against Australia in June. He will be the batter to watch out for. Sadeera Samarawickrama will partner up with Mendis in the middle. Samarawickrama scored a century against Pakistan.

Besides these two, the Lankan batting attack looks weak. And the bowling unit is not performing any different. In two games, they have managed to take 9 wickets and have conceded 773 runs. Dilshan Madhushanka is Lanka’s leading wicket-taker with 4 wickets. The two key bowlers Maheesha Pathirana and Dunith Welalage have conceded 185 & 147 runs each in these two games.

AUS vs SL Pitch Report

The fourteenth ODI of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on 16th October from 2 pm. The venue has a capacity of 50,000 spectators and has hosted 1 Test, 10 ODIs, & 9 T20Is. In the last game, South Africa have recorded the highest total on the ground (311) against Australia.

Toss: To Bowl

In 10 ODIs, the results have favored the teams chasing the target. The teams batting second have won the games 7 times. The average first innings score is 228. The team winning the toss should bowl first. Interesting fact: In 10 games of this World Cup, teams defending the target have won 8 times.

Both teams have lost their first two games and are in search of their first victory. The stats are showing two sides of the same coin when it comes to scoring runs. While Australia is yet to score 200 runs, Sri Lanka have ed 300-plus runs in both games. So, it will not depend on batting but on bowling.

The Australian bowling unit has a terrific record against Sri Lanka. Cummins, Starc, and Zampa have averaged less than 20 against Sri Lanka. Though Sri Lanka have 3 wins in the last 5 games against Australia, the Kangaroos have a better record in the World Cup. They have 8 wins and 2 losses so far.

We predict that Australia will defeat Sri Lanka.
