The T20I series was marked by a remarkable series of performances from Windies skipper Hayley Matthews. She was also the top wicket-taker in the series.

Nevertheless, in spite of some unbelievable knocks from Matthews, the hosts secured a 2-1 series win. And now the two sides will meet again at the Allan Border Field for the 1st ODI match.

There aren’t many changes in the Australian squad. Grace Harris is out and Alana King is in. Whereas, West Indies Women have the same squad for both series.

The hosts will surely have the upper hand going into this match. Not only do they have a deep batting lineup but most of their key players are in great touch.

West Indies Women are hugely dependent on skipper Hayley Matthews in both departments. Afy Fletcher and Karishma Ramharack are some of the promising names in the bowling attack but none has been consistent.

Australia Preview

Australia will be looking to get the better of the Windies skipper in this match. They’ve failed to gain the upper hand against her every single time in the recent T20I series.

It was Matthews who single-handedly led the Widnies Women to a win while chasing a massive target in the 2nd T20I. Aussie skipper Alyssa Healey should be coming into this match with plans for dismissing Matthews early in the innings.

Megan Schutt will lead the bowling attack. The great thing about this bowling setup is that Schutt doesn’t have any pressure to deliver every single time.

There are many others who step up and deliver when the situation calls for a breakthrough. Ashleigh Gardner is one such reliable bowler who can trouble the visitors with her spin.

And since there are many all-rounders in the side, Healey will have the benefit of variety in the bowling attack. Tahlia McGrath and Elysse Perry will be crucial in the middle order.

These two are the reliable batters who can build partnerships and set the foundation for a big finish. Further down the order, there are the likes of Ashleigh Gardner and Phoebe Litchfield who have also delivered consistently.

This is a formidable Australian side and will pose a tough challenge to the visitors in every aspect of the game.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Alyssa Healy (c & wk), Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, Jess Jonassen, Kim Garth, Darcie Brown

West Indies Women Preview

Hayley Matthews was a class apart in the T20I series winning Player of the Match every single game and eventually also winning the Player of the Series award. She topped both the batting and bowling charts. She was the top-scorer in the series with 310 runs at an average of 155.

The second-highest run-scorer was Tahlia McGrath with 129 runs from 3 innings. That shows that Hayley Matthews was in a different league altogether. She was the top wicket-taker with 5 wickets at an average of 17.40 which was the best bowling average. However, there are 11 players in a team and one player alone cannot take the team to victory.

This is an ODI match where Matthews may not be able to repeat the heroics of the 2nd T20I. She will need Chinelle Henry, Stephanie Taylor, and Shemaine Campbelle to rise to the occasion and find their rhythm with the bat.

Like the opposition, Windies Women also have plenty of all-rounders in the squad and that should allow for depth in the batting lineup. In the lower-order Rashada Williams and batting all-rounder Zaid James are crucial figures.

However, there haven’t been any promising performances from any of these players against the Aussies in their previous ODI encounters. The skipper will also be hoping for a better performance from the bowlers. Aaliya Alleyne and Shamilia Connell will be key bowlers to watch out for.

West Indies Women Predicted Playing XI:

Hayley Matthews (c), Shabika Gajnabi, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams (wk), Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry, Aaliyah Alleyne, Zaida James, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack

Weather Conditions

It is a good batting-wicket as we saw in the T20I series. However, the bowlers also get a lot of purchase from the surface and it will be an even contest between the bat and the ball. The weather will be partly cloudy with a high of 23 degrees Celsius in Brisbane on the match day.

AUSW vs WIW Pitch Report

Allan Border Field in Brisbane will host the first ODI of this series. The average 1st innings score here in ODIs is 217 runs. There have been quite a few high-scoring games here where the hosts have crossed the 300-run mark. In this match, considering the current form of both teams, we reckon a 250+ runs total will be a competitive 1st innings score.

Toss: To Bowl

Team bowling first has won 10 of the 18 ODIs played at this venue. It is not a high-scoring venue in one-dayers and if the bowlers do well early on, they can restrict the team batting first to a par-score.

Australia Women are a much superior side with in-form batters in their deep batting lineup. They are familiar with the conditions and have a good record at home. The visitors have struggled in every aspect and have only one reliable player in both departments. It will be an uphill battle for Windies Women to take on the hosts in ODIs. As a result, Australia Women will start as big favorites in our match prediction.
