Botswana lock horns against Rwanda in the fifth match of the Africa Continental T20 Cup 2024 on Friday, 6th December. The match is slated to be played at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, Kigali City in Rwanda and the scheduled start time is 12:45 PM IST.
Botswana are coming off a 29-run loss against Nigeria in their last match, while Rwanda are also coming off a 112-run loss against Uganda in their last match. Both teams have lost two games apiece in the tournament and are set to clash for the first time in the continental cup. This is a crucial game for both teams as they look for their first win of the season. Currently, Botswana stands in third place, while Rwanda are at the bottom of the points table.
When it comes to the head-to-head record, Rwanda and Botswana have clashed four times in T20Is, with Rwanda winning three games and Botswana winning just one. In the three wins, Rwanda won two matches batting first and one match bowling first. K Motlhanka from Botswana has scored 129 runs in four matches, the most runs in Rwanda vs Botswana head-to-head matches. D Maisuria and M Akayezu, with seven wickets each, are the top wicket-takers.
Botswana in their last game against won the toss against Nigeria and opted to bowl first, but their bowlers didn't deliver as expected as the Nigerian batters smashed their bowlers to all corners of the ground as they scored 185/5. Tumelo Mpatane with two wickets was the best bowler but he was a tad expensive giving away 46 runs. Boemo Kgosiemang also picked up one wicket and he was the most economical bowler giving away 5.75 runs per over.
Then chasing down a huge total, Botswana were in trouble at 53/3 in 6.4 overs, with their opener Karabo Motlhanka scoring 29 runs in 22 balls, smashing three fours and one sixes. Reginald Nehonde coming in at number 4, he stepped up and scored 60 runs in 43 balls smashing three fours and two sixes. But he didn't have any from the other end. Thatayaone Tshose scored 23 runs in 18 balls at the fag end of their innings but it was to little too late.
R Nehonde with 66 runs in two matches is the top-scorer for Botswana in the tournament, their captain Motlhanka scored 46 runs so far, he has provided good and fast starts in both the matches, the problem has been the other top order batters haven't fired and contributed. Their bowling unit has conceded way too many runs in the powerplay and death overs, which has costed them big time.
Karabo Motlhanka (c), Monroux Kasselman, Valentine Mbazo (wk), Reginald Nehonde, Vinoo Balakrishnan, Tharindu Perera, Thatayaone Tshose, Katlo Piet, Mmoloki Mooketsi, Boemo Kgosiemang, Tumelo Mpatane

Rwanda just haven't been able to get their campaign going in the tournament so far as they lost another game by a huge margin of 112 runs. Rwanda won the toss and opted to bowl first and once again their bowlers couldn't stop the carnage of Uganda batters where they scored 192/7 in 20 overs. Muhammad Nadir with 1/25 was the top and most economical bowler. Ignace Ntirenganya, Zappy Bimenyimana and Martin Akayezu also picked up wicket apiece.
Then chasing down the target Rwanda never really got their innings going after a good start where both their openers added 37 runs in 3.4 overs for the opening wicket. Oscar Manishimwe (16 runs) and Didier Ndikubwimana (14 runs) looked in good touch before falling for Nakrani and Nsubuga respectively. Then they just kept losing at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 83 runs in 16.1 overs.
O Manishimwe and I Niyomugabo are top run-scorers with 36 runs, while in the bowling department M Akayezu with three wickets is the leading wicket taker for them in the competition. Rwanda has failed to score runs on a relatively good batting surface which has led to their downfall.
Oscar Manishimwe, Didier Ndikubwimana (c & wk), Isae Niyomugabo, Orchide Tuyisenge, Daniel Gumyusenge, Rukundo Jean Pierre, Emile Rukiriza, Martin Akayezu, Muhammad Nadir, Zappy Bimenyimana, Ignace Ntirenganya

The weather at Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, Rwanda on Friday is expected to be around 22°C to 24°C and Sunny periods with a light rain in the afternoon, with 75% precipitation and 77% humidity. The match could be affected by rain, which could result in delays during the match hours.
The surface at Kigali is a balanced track that favors both the batters and bowlers in general, but scores have gone in the last two matches where the first innings scores were 185 and 192 runs. Spinners have done most of the damage where the 7-15 overs phase has been tough for the batters and it is also the phase where teams have lost most wickets. Teams chasing have struggled to chase down totals in the ongoing tournament.
In the 98 T20 matches played at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, Rwanda teams batting first won 42 matches, while the teams batting second won 49 matches. But in the current tournament teams batting first won three of the four matches played. We predict the team that wins the toss will opt to bat first
Despite both their losses, Botswana have displayed great fight, while on the other hand, Rwanda have been outplayed in both batting and bowling. Given the current form and balance of both teams, we back Botswana to win the match.
