All eyes of cricket fans from across the globe will be on the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Friday evening as the 2024 edition of the IPL gets underway with last year's champions CSK taking on RCB who as ever have a team full of big name stars.
CSK not only come into this game in front of their own fans as the reigning champions, but also with a very strong recent record against RCB. The teams met only once last year with CSK winning by 8 runs, one of four victories from the last five head to heads for MS Dhoni's side.
But very few pundits will catch themselves writing off RCB! Led by Faf du Plessis who continues to plunder T20 runs at the age of 39 alongside a refreshed Virat Kohli not to mention an in-form Glenn Maxwell, RCB are likely to be one of the top teams in this campaign.

Chennai Super Kings will be without Devon Conway for this game and at least the first half of the tournament due to a thumb injury. Although the New Zealand opener has been struggling with his form in 2024, he was in brilliant shape during the 2023 IPL and hit six half-centuries including a top score of 92 not out.
However, with a side that includes the evergreen MS Dhoni likely to take on the finisher's role and Moeen Ali ready to cleanly strike any delivery in his 'slot', Daryl Mitchell in the form of his life, not to mention Ruturaj Gaikwad who averaged 42.14 last season, CSK will not struggle to fill Conway's void!
And they have a new New Zealander to rely on in Rachin Ravindra who is equally capable of winning a game with bat or ball. The bowling attack covers most bases and with Dhoni's calm captaincy, CSK will be expected to get off to a winning start in front of their home fans.
Ajinkya Rahane has a very good record against RCB (685 runs in 21 matches; Avg: 36.05) and he has scored 173 runs in 11 matches at M.A. Chidambaram stadium. In the recent intra squad matches, Rahane notched up scores of over 30 and looks in great touch ahead of todays match. Given his recent form and record against RCB, we back Rahane to score over 21.5 runs.

RCB will feel they let themselves down last season when they failed to reach the play-offs and they will also have been inspired by the success of their women's side who produced a brilliant finish to their season to win the WPL on Sunday!
As ever, RCB have a squad full of superstars from not just India but also white ball specialists from across the globe - highlighted by the fact that Tom Curran, who has been a strong performer across many franchise tournaments over the last decade, is unlikely to get a starting spot in this match.
With one of the most powerful top sevens in the competition, we fully expect to see Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli take the attack to CSK's bowlers from the first ball of their innings.
Maxwell has had an absolute blast over the last three months and he is coming into this year's IPL in the form of his life. He has scored 176 runs in three matches at M.A Chidambaram Stadium and averages 57. Coming to his record against the hosts CSK, Maxwell has scored 364 runs in 12 matches. The last time he played against CSK he scored 76 runs in 36 balls. Given his current form, we back Glenn Maxwell to score over 35.5 runs.

High TurnThis famous ground has hosted plenty of big matches over the decades and has also seen many huge moments in the history of the IPL. The ball will turn for the spinners and will also grip for any pacers who produce variations of note. A par score is likely to be around 180 with the average score across all 16 previous seasons at the ground 163.18.
The average total aggregate score at M.A.Chidambaram stadium last season is 326 runs. But the matches between CSK and RCB have always been high scoring and in their last three head to head matches the average aggregate score is 395 runs. As it is the first match of the season the conditions are likely to favour the batsman and we predict the total aggregate score to be over 330.5 runs.
Fielding first was the usual approach for skippers in last year's IPL and with there always being a little bit of doubt around ahead of the opening fixture in of the pitch and conditions, we predict that CSK and RCB will both want to bowl first ahead of Match 1.
Cricket fans could not ask for a more enticing fixture to begin the 2024 IPL and we predict that both CSK and RCB will put on a show worthy of the opening match! RCB will be looking to the likes of Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell to get them off to a winning start but we expect CSK to have just a touch too much quality in all departments. We are predicting a close contest with CSK getting the win.
We are backing Chennai Super Kings to win this match!
