The last time these two teams met each other, the game went right down to the wire. A last ball six from Sajeevan Sajana ultimately got the Indians over the line. But the chase was not straightforward; the contest swung back and forth, fitting of a high-octane tournament like WPL.
The Capitals were crestfallen but accepted the defeat graciously only to bounce back with three wins in a row. Not just ordinary get-over-the-line wins, but convincing routs in the context of T20 context. Mumbai Indians, the defending champions, knocked over Gujarat in their next fixture but had a hiccup against UP Warriorz. However, they bounced back in style to defeat RCB Women in their most recent match of the competition.
The Indians still lead the head to head 3-1 convincingly but they know full well they can’t afford to take the Capitals lightly, as the tournament moves on from the halfway stage.

A 25-run win over Gujarat Giants saw Delhi Capitals jump over Mumbai Indians to seal their place at the top of the table. Captain Meg Lanning was brilliant, leading from the front with another handy half century. Her 55 was the highest by any Delhi batter, with Alice Capsey and Annabel Sutherland hitting 27 and 20 respectively in no time to help their team finish with 163/8 in their allotted overs. Pacer Shikha Pandey, scoring 14 off just 8 balls, finished with a flourish, but Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma fell cheaply and couldn’t make a significant contribution to the tally.
The Delhi bowlers made 164 look even more challenging with their accurate bowling early on. Their new ball bowlers bowled with precision and picked up a wicket on the 9th ball of the innings although the first run off the bat came on the 14th delivery. But before Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield could rebuild, fellow Aussie Jess Jonassen was brought into the attack and she dismissed both of them in the same over, breaking the back of the Giants’ chase. She ed for the top scoring Aussie Ash Gardner by having her stumped in the 15th over, basically dashing their hopes of a chase.
On display was the skills and temperament of a well-rounded team, which, under a captain having several world titles under her belt, is clearly surging ahead.

Mumbai Indians have won 3 of their 4 matches so far and are looking good to seal their spot in the top 2, but a lot of it hinges on them performing at their optimal best against the Capitals in this encounter. Nat Sciver Brunt has been handed the captaincy following Harmanpreet Kaur’s brief time away from the squad. And she has done well to keep the team motivated and on course for title defence.
They had a bad game against UP Warriorz recently, but they didn’t let that loss develop into something worse as they tackled the RCB challenge pretty well to stay in touch of the top position on the table. A win against Delhi Capitals here will put them back at the top and they have a good reason to believe they can get there. Hayley Matthews has found form after a few poor outings early on, and Yastika Bhatia has been in good nick as well. Amelia Kerr has been brilliant with both bat and ball, and is a key cog in their wheel.
Pooja Vastrakar hasn’t exceeded expectations but she has played her role well and been a dependable ally to Kerr so far. Issy Wong who replaced Shabnam Ismail is easing her way into good bowling rhythm, as well.

The deck at this venue has a bit of reputation to assist spinners and slow bowlers. Deceptive skills get great value on the surface here, so we expect both teams to pack their side up with as many twirlers as possible. The forecast suggests the weather will play just fine and we should have a complete contest. It’s early summer and it remains to be seen whether dew will play a role.

Minimal TurnThis match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The WPL carnival has reached Delhi after entertaining crowds in Mumbai last season, and Bangalore early this season. This is the first time a WPL fixture is taking place here and we all know which team the local crowd will be cheering for.
DC has won two games setting a total and one chasing. MI has made clear their intentions of batting second, winning every time they got a chance at chasing a total. It should be an interesting toss, though. But we guess the team chasing will have an advantage here.
Mumbai Indians may not be on the top at the moment but they’ve outclassed Delhi Capitals 3 out of 4 times so far in WPL. And we’re guessing MI will be too hot to handle for the Delhi Capitals in this contest.
We are backing Mumbai Indians Women as winners of this contest.
