The finalists of the Lanka Premier League 2023 are finally here. Dambulla Aura will take on B-Love Kandy in the final of the event at the R. Premadasa Stadium tonight. Dambulla defeated Galle Titans comfortably by 6 wickets in Qualifier 1 to storm into the finals. Meanwhile, Kandy earned their finals berth by conquering both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2. Both teams are playing their first-ever final, and there will definitely be some nerves in both camps.
Dambulla Aura have had a near-perfect season. They ended the group stage at the number one spot and reached the finals on the back of five consecutive wins.
There have plenty of stars this season for Dambulla. Their batting department has been dominated by opener Avishka Fernando, who has scored 239 runs in 8 innings at an average of almost 30 and a strike rate of 129. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama, have collected 198 runs each at an identical average of 24.75. These three at the top have ensured Dambulla almost always gets a respectable start. Their performance in the final will be crucial.
Another batter who can make a difference is Kusal Perera. The middle-order batter took his team home with a brilliant 53 off 39 balls in Qualifier 1 against Galle Titans in a chase of 147. He has found form at the right time and can be really dangerous.
On the bowling front too, Dambulla are stacked with options. Spinners Dhananjaya de Silva and Noor Ahmad, with 10 and 9 wickets, respectively, have been the standout performers for them. Among the fast bowlers, it’s Pakistani speedster Hasan Ali (8 wickets in 5 innings at an economy of 6.78) and Australian quick Hayden Kerr (9 wickets in 8 innings at 7.14) who can make early inroads.

Wanindu Hasaranga has almost single-handedly carried Kandy into the final with his brilliant all-round show. He is Kandy’s leading run-getter (279 runs in 9 innings at an average of 34.87 and a strike rate of almost 190). He is in sensational form and has won two back-to-back Player of the Match awards, including one in Kandy’s match against Galle Titans in Qualifier 2. , Kandy were in a spot of bother at 20/3 inside the powerplay while batting first, but Hasaranga top-scored with a 30-ball 48 to take his team's total above 150. Despite a hamstring injury, Kandy’s captain then came out to bowl and finished with figures of 2/21.
So, it goes without saying that Hasaranga will be the main player for Kandy in the final. Thankfully, he has said that he is pretty confident that he will be fit to play the final.
Apart from him, Kandy will also depend on the experienced duo of Dinesh Chandimal (235 runs in 9 innings at an average of 27.11 and a strike rate of 127) and Angelo Mathews (185 runs in 9 innings at an average of 23.12 and a strike rate of 136) to hold the middle order together.
Chaturanga de Silva has only played three matches this season but has made an impact. The spin bowling all-rounder has grabbed 4 wickets at an economy of 5.60 so far. His spell of 2-16 in 4 overs in the Qualifier proved to be detrimental.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who has 8 wickets this season at an economy of 7.29, will bowl in the powerplay. We are expecting another impactful spell from him tonight.
Mohammad Haris, Thanuka Dabare, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Angelo Mathews, Chaturanga de Silva, Asif Ali, Wanindu Hasaranga (c), Sahan Arachchige, Lahiru Madushanka, Mohammad Hasnain, Mujeeb Ur Rahman

The pitch at the R. Premadasa Stadium has become slower and tougher to bat on as the tournament has progressed. Batters will need to spend some time getting used to the nature of the pitch before they can start going slam bang. When the ball is new, it will come on nicely to the bat, and therefore, the powerplay will be really important for both teams. After the first few overs, however, spinners will dominate the contest. They will get plenty of grip and turn from the surface, and batters will need to use proper technique to attack them.
The weather in Colombo will be mostly cloudy. A couple of morning showers are expected, but the match shouldn’t be affected.
The average score batting first at the R. Premadasa Stadium is 147. The highest total posted here this season is 188, scored by two teams. The team batting first in the final should look to set a target in the range of 160-170 runs.
This is the final, and the team winning the toss is likely to bat first. Chasing in such a high-pressure game is never a wise move. Moreover, the last two matches here were won comfortably by the team batting first.
Dambulla and Kandy have clashed twice this season, with both winning one game each. Dambulla has better balance in their squad, both in batting and bowling. Kandy, meanwhile, have a good team as well, but are a little too dependent on their skipper. Given his form, though, we are expecting another sterling all-round effort from Hasaranga. Despite that, we reckon the overall depth Dambulla has in the bowling and batting departments should help them overcome the Hasaranga challenge and come out on top.
We are backing Dambulla Aura as the winners of the Lanka Premier League 2023.
