Any series between England and Australia will get the juices going of cricket fans across the globe and this series looks set to do the same even if it is played under the backdrop of mid-late September weather in the UK!

There are just over 14 months until the two teams will lock horns once more in a Men's Ashes series and although many of the England players in this series are not under consideration for those five Tests, a strong series could well see them catapulted into having an opportunity. The same goes for Australia although they have a much more recognisable side with many players targeting the Ashes.

The T20I series between the two teams showed the attacking intent of both sides in white ball cricket and we do not expect that to change, particularly at Trent Bridge where England broke the ODI world record total in their golden era ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Expect rivalry and top quality cricket aplenty in this ODI and across the series.

England Preview

England's rotating captaincy this summer continues into this series with Jos Buttler ruled out through injury. And after Ollie Pope took over the Test side due to Ben Stokes' hamstring injury, with Phil Salt stepping up in place of Buttler in the recently concluded T20I games, it is the turn of Harry Brook to lead in this series.

The 25 year old Yorkshireman had played 57 Tests and T20Is but only 15 ODIs and this is the only format in which he averages under 30! There have also been a few question marks against his ability over the course of this summer and five games captaining against Australia are sure to see him under the microscope.

England's batting line-up looks decidedly inexperienced but the opposite is true for their bowlers with Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer likely to cause the most problems.

England Predicted Playing XI:

Phil Salt (wk), Will Jacks, Ben Duckett, Jordan Cox, Harry Brook (c), Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood, Reece Topley

England Actual Playing XI:

Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Philip Salt, Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone

Australia Preview

Mitchell Marsh will lead a strong Australia side in this series with perhaps only Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood unavailable from their first choice ODI side. It has been a successful tour of the UK so far for the tourists who have won four and lost just one of their six scheduled games. And with that strong foundation they have the luxury of bringing back some big guns for this series.

With the bat, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and keeper-batter Alex Carey have linked up with the squad and all three are expected to take the field in this opening game. Mitchell Starc will bring pace and wicket-taking ability to the quick bowling attack and the all-round world class skills of Glenn Maxwell will improve any white ball side in the world.

Overall, Australia look to be taking this series very seriously and have the players to produce the desired results.

AUS Over/Under Betting Tips

Travis Head to score over 32.5 runs 1.85

Bet now

Head scored 90 runs in the T20I series including a quick fire half century in the 1st T20I. He has been in phenomenal form scoring runs with consistency in 2024. Given his recent form, we back Head to come good in today's match and score over 32.5 runs.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Alex Carey (wk), Travis Head, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Ben Dwarshuis

Australia Actual Playing XI:

Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Matthew Short, Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa, Ben Dwarshuis

Weather Conditions

After a very disappointing summer for the UK, the past few days have seen temperatures above average and this is set to be the case in Nottingham on Thursday where a high of 20 degrees is expected with no chance of any accompanying rain.

Trent Bridge has racked up some huge ODI scores over the years but this year has not produced quite as many runs in white ball fixtures as previously seen. That said, we still expect to see a high scoring game in Nottingham with bright sunshine forecast across the match!

Total Over/Under Betting Tips

Total Match Score Under 583.5 runs 1.83

Bet now

The average total match scores in the last three 50-over matches played at Nottingham is 544 runs. The last three head-to-head matches between these two teams have not seen a single match exceed the 583-run mark, with the average score being 523 runs. We predict another moderate-scoring game with the total match score to be under 583.5 runs.

Toss: To Bowl

With the last four completed ODIs in Nottingham won by the team batting first, it would be quite the surprise if either of the two captains chose to field first ahead of this opening game of the series.

Although the T20I series was shared, Australia were the more dominant side over the two games played. They have more experience than England who are without Jos Buttler so we are predicting a victory for the tourists in this opening ODI of the series.

We are backing Australia to win!
