England is all set to take on New Zealand for a 4-match T20I series and a 4-match ODI series before they start their bid to retain the ODI World Championship. The first T20I between the two will be played at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on 30th August 2023 from 10:30 pm onwards.
England has played just three T20Is since their second T20 World Cup title back in 2022. Surprisingly, the world champions lost to Bangladesh 3-0. Adil Rashid was the leading wicket-taker in the series with 8 wickets while Jason Roy led the runs table. Yet after topping both departments, England couldn’t manage to win a single game in Bangladesh.
On the other hand, New Zealand has played 14 T20Is this year winning just 50% out of it. Recently they played a three-match T20I series against UAE in Dubai. Though NZ won the series, they ended up losing a game by 7 wickets. Mark Chapman was named player of the series for his 129 runs while Tim Southee led the bowling unit with 6 wickets in 3 games.
The last time both teams played against each other was back in the T20 World Cup. England won that game by 20 runs. Both English openers Jos Butler (73) and Alex Hales (52) scored half-centuries to put up a target of 180 runs for New Zealand. Despite Glenn Phillips's 62 off 36 deliveries, England managed to pull a 20-run victory. Chris Woakes and Sam Curran picked up 2 wickets each in the winning cause.
The current NZ tour will be a practice for both teams before they head for the ODI World Cup. It's been a great rivalry between the two since England managed to triumph over the visitors in the final of the last ODI World Cup. The home conditions will favor the English team, but New Zealand will sure be giving them a tough battle.

England have filled up their squad with a number of all-rounders and bowlers who can bat to the number 10 position. Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone are back in the squad, after missing the Bangladesh tour. It is still not clear if Butler will open the innings for England. Butler played the entire Bangladesh T20I series at the number four position, where he scored 111 runs at a strike rate of 140.50. Butler has been the leading run scorer for England since last year. He has scored 573 runs in 18 matches at a strike rate of 156.13.
England might send him with Dawid Malan to open the innings. Malan has played 21 games since last year scoring just two runs less than his skipper at a strike rate of 127.74. The duo have scored 9 fifties for England since 2022. Malan has an amazing record against New Zealand. The left-hander batter has 364 runs in 8 games at a strike rate of 155.56 including a century and three half-centuries. He will be the batter to look out for.
Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone will be in the playing eleven replacing Ben Duckett and Rehan Ahmed. Brook’s emergence in the English setup has been the story of the last year. Though he has been successful in the Test format, he has a comparatively average record in T20Is. In 17 innings, Brook has just one half-century with 372 runs at a strike rate of 137.77.
All-rounder Sam Curran is struggling with the bat since his World Cup-winning performance. In his last 14 innings, Curran has 89 runs at a strike rate of 91.75. But he is the leading wicket-taker for England in the same time frame. Curran has claimed 26 wickets in 22 innings at an economy of 7.47. Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid will Curran in the bowling department with Moeen Ali. Moeen Ali has hit the highest number of sixes (33) for England since the start of 2022. Gus Atkinson is set to make a debut after John Turner got ruled out due to an injury.

It’s been a roller coaster ride for New Zealand in the shortest format of international cricket. They have won 7 out of 14 in the captaincy of Tim Southee this year. But they have started the England tour on a high note winning both practice games. Chad Bowes and Tim Seifert will open the innings for New Zealand. Seifert has been a regular in the New Zealand squad for the last few months. Seifert has played 6 T20Is since last year scoring 242 runs at a strike rate of 166.89 - the highest amongst the New Zealand batters, with three half-centuries.
Devon Conway and Finn Allen will likely play all three T20Is. Allen has scored 460 runs at a strike rate of 152.31 with a century and half-century each. While Conway has 632 runs in 18 innings since 2022. Though Conway’s strike rate is just above 120, those five half-centuries can’t be unnoticed.
New Zealand’s middle-order is one of the most destructive squads in the world. They will play Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, and James Nisham in the middle. The quartet has scored 2432 runs in 27 games since the start of the last year. Phillips has been New Zealand’s leading run-scorer. He has 740 runs in 22 innings with a century and 6 half-centuries. He will be the batter to watch out for. Phillips also scored 97 runs in two practice games without getting out at a strike rate of 188. The NZ middle-order has hit 15 half-centuries and 2 centuries in the last 12 months. Daryl Mitchell has 648 runs in the last 25 T20Is at a strike rate of 140. Whereas Chapman has 636 runs in 18 innings with a century and 5 half-centuries. James Nisham has more than 400 runs and 14 wickets playing at number 7.
Tim Southee will lead the bowling unit with Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson. Southee has picked 29 wickets in the last 18 innings at an economy of 7.80. Both Jamison and Ferguson picked three wickets each in the first practice game. It will be difficult for New Zealand to include both Santner and Sodhi in the set up. The leg spinners are standing as the leading wicket-takers for NZ. Sodhi has picked 35 wickets in 31 innings while Santner has 29 in 24. If both are included, then James Nisham might sit outside.

The weather will be partly cloudy. The temperature will range between 9 and 18. The wind will be flowing from the west at 10-25 kmh. The pitch at Chester-le-Street is traditionally known to offer assistance to both batsmen and bowlers, making for an intriguing contest between bat and ball. It is typically a balanced wicket, offering something for everyone and ensuring an exciting game for players and spectators alike. Fast bowlers will relish the initial overs with the new ball. The seam movement and occasional swing can trouble even the best of batsmen.

The first T20I between the two will be played at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on 30th August 2023 from 10:30 pm onwards. The venue has a capacity of 17000 spectators and has hosted 6 Tests, 23 ODIs & 6 T20Is. In 2018, England have recorded a highest total of 195 on this ground against Australia.
In 6 T20Is, the results have favored the team chasing the target 4 times. The last two games of Men’s T20Is have been won by teams defending the target. The average first innings score at the Village is 130. The team winning the toss should bowl first.
New Zealand has played more T20Is than England this year. Though they have just 50% win rate, most of the games they have played without their A team. With everyone back in the squad for New Zealand, they will be high on confidence. New Zealand batters have scored more than 3000 runs since the last year with three centuries and more than 25 half-centuries. They have a strong bowling unit too.
England is yet to win a T20I since the win in the World Cup final. They have lost all three games played since then. Also, at Chester-le-Street, they have one win in three games.
We predict that New Zealand will defeat England.
