Pakistan’s excruciating wait for their first ODI win against England continues. Despite fighting well in the series opener, the visitors lost the game by a fairly big margin of 36 runs.
The result could’ve gone their way had a few of their lower middle order batters shown better temperament and not thrown away their wickets. But the English bowlers kept things tidy in the middle overs and the Pakistani batters lost their way with pressure mounting.
Having improved through the T20 series and put in a decent performance in the first ODI, Pakistan women would be determined to post their first win on the board and improve their terrible record against England: 12 losses and 1 no result in thirteen games.

England captain Heather Knight couldn’t have been more accurate on calling the first ODI win as scrappy. It really was. After being asked to bat first, England women started without any real trouble with several of them- Tammy Beaumont, Nat Sciver Brunt, and Amy Jones- making it to the 30s but failing to carry on. Alice Capsey shook off a string of low scores in the ODI format to finish with 44, the highest by any player on either side.
Captain Heather Knight perished one run shy of 30, and Charlie Dean was dismissed for a well-made 20 off 21. England wrapped up their innings with 243 on board, leaving Pakistan a stiff target to chase. Seam bowlers Kate Cross and Lauren Bell started off well, but Pakistan batters found a way to settle down and keep the scoreboard moving along.
But the course of the match shifted in England’s way once the spin bowling dup Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean were introduced to the attack. They bowled well in tandem exhibiting great control over their line and length, and picked up 5 wickets between them.

Pakistan women came into this series knowing full well that the odds were stacked against them this whole tour.
They failed to make a mark in the first two T20s but showed great character in fighting it out in the third. A 0-3 loss in the T20 series away from home in an unknown territory came as no surprise, but it looked like the Pakistani women were working up a bit of momentum and finding their rhythm slowly. However, as the defeat in Derby showed, this Pakistani side is not able to exercise authority over the opposition of England’s quality for an extended period of the match.
Players like Nida Dar, Sadaf Hamas, Diana Baig are finding ways to dominate the English side, but still they’ve not still mastered the art of closing games out from advantageous positions. Even in the first match, despite getting their chase off to a good start the team crumbled to pressure and lost wickets at regular intervals, which played into the hands of the English spinners who were relentless in their attack.

The wickets here have generally been good to bat on, but the conditions are going to be a bit damp with a bit of rain leading up to the match. Stodgy wickets with moisture trapped in might not be conducive for batting, though. Besides, rain is forecast for a good part of the match as well, so we might have a curtailed match if the rain gods are kind enough.

The second match of the ODI series is scheduled to happen at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton. Both teams have yet to face each other at this venue, where England women have dominated other teams in the recent past.
England have not had to bat second yet in the matches so far, and Pakistan might be encouraged to see if they can subject the English women under scoreboard pressure by asking them to chase. Besides, teams have had success chasing here so the English girls wouldn’t mind chasing here.
England women are playing decent cricket and still winning by comfortable margins. If they kick up a gear and put on a clinic, they’ll be invincible against this Pakistani batting lineup which looks a bit circumspect in foreign conditions.
