England Women emerged victorious against Sri Lanka Women in Hove amidst damp conditions, as Alice Capsey's rapid fifty and Mahika Gaur's debut wicket underscored the bright prospects of a fresh and experimental squad. They have now taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series and will be looking to seal the deal in the next match in Chelmsford this Saturday. Sri Lanka Women looked out of sorts in the first match. Perhaps they are still getting used to the English conditions. However, if they don’t get their act together quickly, the series will be gone.

England had the most perfect game to start their white-ball series against Sri Lanka. After being asked to bat first in a rain-reduced match, England bludgeoned 186-4 from their 17 overs courtesy of sterling performances from Danielle Wyatt (48 off 30 balls) and Alice Capsey (51 off 27 balls). While the victory margin ultimately narrowed to a mere 12 runs, with Duckworth-Lewis-Stern revising Sri Lanka's target to 68 runs within six overs, there was little question that England retained a firm grip on the game.
The presence of Wyatt and Capsey in the top three provides England with great strength and stability. Then there is the vastly experienced Heather Knight at the No.5 position. Knight has 1641 runs in 90 T20I innings at an average of 23.44 and a strike rate of 118.65, with one hundred and four fifties. She remained unbeaten on 23 off 17 balls in the first match, and we are expecting another handy contribution from her in this match.
England’s bowlers didn’t get to do much in the last game, but there is enough quality there. Leg-spinner Sarah Glenn has been their most successful bowler in recent times, picking up 11 wickets in her last 9 matches at an economy of 6.86. Charlie Dean (9 wickets in the last 9 matches at 7.43) is another one who can make an impact.
17-year-old Mahika Gaur made an impressive debut in the first T20I, and it would be interesting to see if the left-arm quick can continue the good work.

Sri Lanka Women have their task cut out in this T20I series. Their bowlers looked hapless in the first match, with four of the six used going at over 11 an over. Only skipper Chamari Athapaththu (1-25 off 4 overs) managed to keep the English batters quiet with her offbreaks.
Slow left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera (11 wickets in the last 10 matches at an economy of 6.19) went for plenty as well, but she is a wicket-taker, and we are backing her to do better in the second match.
Udeshika Prabodhani, too, was taken to the cleaners in the first T20I. However, she is Sri Lanka’s fourth-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, with 57 scalps at an economy of 5.34. The previous match would have given her some idea about the conditions here, and we can hence expect a better show from the left-arm seamer.
In the batting unit, it is Harshitha Samarawickrama you should watch out for. The middle-order batter has come into this series on the back of a terrific run, scoring 320 runs in her last 10 matches at an average of 64 and a strike rate of 100.31.
Skipper Chamari Athapaththu will, of course, play a vital role. The experienced batter is just one run away from 2500 T20I runs and would like to make the moment special by scoring a big one.

The surface at County Ground offers to both pacers and spinners. In the early overs, the seamers can extract movement off the surface, especially if the conditions are overcast. Later on, as the game progresses and the pitch settles, batters get the chance to find their rhythm and make the most of the true bounce. The small dimensions of the ground may entice them to play expansive shots, but bowlers who vary their pace and lengths can create doubt and take advantage of any uneven bounce that occurs.
The weather in Chelmsford will be mostly cloudy, with occasional rain and drizzle in the afternoon.
The average score batting first at the County Ground in Chelmsford in women’s T20Is is 140. The highest total posted here is 226-3 by Australia Women against England Women in 2019. Scores between 150 and 190 have been achieved four times here in 12 T20Is. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 170 runs.
Seven of the 12 women’s T20I games played at the County Ground in Chelmsford have been won by the team chasing. Therefore, the team winning the toss is likely to bowl first.
England have now emerged victorious in 10 consecutive T20Is against Sri Lanka, and it looks like they are all set to continue their winning streak against them. They are the home side and know how to utilize these conditions to their advantage, especially against a sub-continental side. England might be missing a few players, but their batting unit is still really strong. Their bowling lacks the usual depth as they are trying out some fresh combinations. This is where Sri Lanka’s batters can cash in. Nevertheless, England's batters are unlikely to struggle greatly against the opposition's bowling lineup, even if they are required to chase down a formidable target.
We are backing England Women to win the second match and take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
