Rain prevented England Women from taking a 2-0 lead in their ODI series against Sri Lanka as the second match at Northampton was abandoned. England were in a dominant position and were looking well on course for victory before rain interrupted the proceedings. Sri Lanka’s batting was exposed again in these conditions, and they would need to do a lot better if they hope to square this series.

England Women Preview

After winning the first ODI by 7 wickets, England Women started the second ODI with a bang. They had Sri Lanka on the mat at 106-9 and would have wrapped things up soon had rain not halted the match. Nevertheless, England’s bowlers stood out again. Their bowling unit had dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting in the first ODI as well, shooting them out for just 106.

The team made some changes in the second ODI. Off-spinner Charlie Dean and all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards were included in the home team, replacing the rested Mahika Gaur and the injured Emma Lamb. Both Dean and Davidson-Richards managed to secure two wickets each, while 22-year-old pacer Lauren Filer, who had made a strong impression in her ODI debut during the series opener, also contributed with two wickets. England found themselves on the brink of bowling Sri Lanka out within their 50-over limit for the second consecutive time.

Dean now has 13 wickets from her last 7 matches at an economy of 4.76. She will definitely be the bowler to watch out for.

As for the batting, England have plenty of depth. Nat Sciver-Brunt is their most in-form player, scoring 453 runs in her last 8 matches at an incredible average of 90.6 and a strike rate of 97.41.

Then they also have the experience of Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight at the top, along with Amy Jones down the order.

England Women Predicted Playing XI:

Tammy Beaumont, Maia Bouchier, Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, Amy Jones (wk), Alice Davidson Richards, Charlotte Dean, Sarah Glenn, Kate Cross, Lauren Filer/ Mahika Gaur

England Women Actual Playing XI:

Mahika Gaur, Charlotte Dean, Alice Capsey, Maia Bouchier, Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Natalie Sciver, Lauren Filer, Alice Richards

Sri Lanka Women Preview

Sri Lanka have plenty of headaches to sort out before they begin the next ODI. Their batting performance has been pathetic in the ODI series, and unless they find a way to tackle England's seam bowlers in the final match, they might struggle again. In the previous game, skipper Chamari Athapaththu once again led from the front with a gritty 34 off as many balls. Unfortunately, she didn’t get any from the other end.

Athapaththu will have to make sure she anchors the innings once again. She has been their most prolific batter in recent times, collecting 476 runs in her last 10 matches at an average of nearly 60 and a strike rate of 117.24.

Another batter who can make an impact is Nilakshi de Silva (190 runs in the last 9 matches at an average of 32). Hasini Perera, who remained unbeaten on 31 off 58 balls in the second ODI, has also looked in decent touch. We are expecting another nice cameo from her in the middle order.

Sri Lanka’s bowling was lackluster in the first match. Their seamers, particularly, didn’t manage to trouble the English batters. They will have to depend on their spinners to take the majority of the wickets. Left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera (10 wickets in the last 10 matches at an economy of 4.73) and right-arm off-spinner Oshadi Ranasinghe (13 wickets in her last 10 matches at 5.62) are our picks for the Lankan bowlers to watch out for in this game.

Sri Lanka Women Predicted Playing XI:

Chamari Athapaththu (c), Vishmi Gunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hasini Perera, Nilakshi de Silva, Kavisha Dilhari, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Oshadi Ranasinghe, Inoka Ranaweera, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya

Sri Lanka Women Actual Playing XI:

Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, Harshitha Madavi, Anushka Sanjeewani, Chamari Atapattu, Achini Kulasuriya, Imesha Dulani, Inoka Ranaweera, Udeshika Prabodhani, Hansima Karunaratne, Oshadi Ranasinghe

Weather Conditions

The pitch at Grace Road is known to assist seam bowling. In the first 10–15 overs, particularly, seam bowlers will find plenty of help off the pitch. With the weather likely to be cloudy during the match, they should get movement off the air too. Once batters get their eye in and see off the new ball bowlers, they will have the chance to make runs. With short, square boundaries, the batters will target one side of the field.

The average score batting first at Grace Road in Leicester is 229 in women’s ODIs. Scores below 200 have been made six times here in 16 ODIs. Totals between 200 to 299 have been posted on seven occasions at the venue. The team batting first will look to set a target of around 250 runs.

Toss: To Bowl

Nine of the 16 ODIs played at Grace Road have been won by the team chasing. With the weather likely to be cloudy, the team winning the toss would look to bowl first and apply pressure on the opposition by taking wickets up front.

England have looked the much superior side in the ODI series. While Sri Lanka did give some fight in the T20Is, they have looked all at sea in the 50-over format. In these conditions, their batters might struggle to play the long innings. What’s more, their seam bowlers have looked ineffective, while their spinners aren’t threatening the opposition batters. England, on the other hand, look pretty comfortable. They know they have dominated Sri Lanka in this format and will be targeting their tenth straight victory against them. They have the resources to dominate them again, and it would be surprising if they fail to notch up a win in the final ODI.

Back England Women to win this match and clinch the series.
