Eastern Storm may not make it to the finals of the 2023 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two, but they seem determined to go out on a high. While they are still in seventh place on the table, they ed a comprehensive win against South Western Districts in their previous game. Eastern Storm’s next match is scheduled for October 8 at Willowmoore Park against Mpumalanga Rhinos. The Rhinos have had a forgettable season and are stuck at the bottom of the table with just one win in 5 games. With just two games left, their best hope is to break out from the bottom and climb a couple of places up.

Eastern Storm are coming off a dominating 43-run win against South Western Districts at Willowmoore Park. After being asked to bat first, the Easterns were bowled out for 228. However, they produced an incredible bowling performance to bowl the opposition out for just 185.
The Easterns were 68-6 at one point in the previous game, but Shane Dadswell (72 off 63 balls) and Aron Visser (65 off 49 balls) resurrected the innings and took the team to a respectable total.
Visser and Dadswell are now the t top run-getters of the team this season, with 176 runs each. That, however, has been the team’s problem. The top and middle order haven’t been consistent at all, which has affected the team’s overall performance. Only Shaylen Pillay (167 runs in 5 matches at an average of 41.75) has been decent.
On the bowling front, Divan Posthumus (10 wickets in 5 innings at an average of 16.60) has stood out. The right-arm medium pacer took 3-24 in the last match against South Western Districts.
In the same match, right-arm off-spinner Juan Lubbe ended up with figures of 3-38 from 9 overs, Given that it was his first match of the season, this was really impressive.

After that win against South Africa Emerging Players in September, Mpumalanga Rhinos have lost three back-to-back matches, the last of which came against Northern Cape on October 4. The Rhinos could manage just 219 after being put in, and Northern Cape chased the target in just 39 overs with 6 wickets remaining.
Captain Jurie Snyman’s 52 and Jon Hinrichsen’s 53 off 29 balls were the only bright lights for the Rhinos from the previous game. Snyman is currently the team’s second-highest run-getter this season, with 182 runs in 5 games at an average of 42.
Muhammed Mayet has been the most consistent batter for the Rhinos this season, collecting 216 runs in 5 innings at an average of 54. He has hit two fifties in the series and the team will be counting on him to get another big score here.
Gareth Dukes has been the standout bowler for the Rhinos. The right-arm quick has nabbed 8 wickets in 5 innings at an average of 28.87 and an economy of 5.71. This pitch has suited him really well, and we expect him to make life difficult for the Easterns.
You can also count on Jon Hinrichsen, who has taken 7 wickets this season at an average of 32.28.

The pitch at Willowmoore Park has something in it for both pacers and batters. Batsmen will enjoy the bounce from the surface, and once they settle in, they can make some runs all around the wicket. Seam bowlers will get consistent movement and bounce off the pitch. It won’t be easy to score against them with the new ball.
The weather in Benoni on Sunday will be very warm with plenty of sun.
The average first innings score over the last nine matches at Willowmoore Park is 251. The highest total posted here is 362-9 by South Africa Emerging Players versus Eastern Storm this very season. The pitch seems to be getting slower as the season is progressing, and the team batting first will look to set a total of around 260-270 runs.
All three matches played at Willowmoore Park this season in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two have been won by the team batting first. Thus, it goes without saying that the toss-winning team is likely to bat first here.
There have just been two matches played between Eastern Storm and Mpumalanga Rhinos; one was abandoned and the other was won by the Easterns. This season hasn’t gone to plan for both teams. Their batting, particularly, has led them down. Overall, however, the Easterns appear to have a better squad when compared to the Rhinos. Both teams will be looking for their batting units to fire in this match. We feel that after that performance in their last match, the Easterns will have the edge in this encounter. The Rhinos are down in confidence and will need something special to pull off a win here.
Back Eastern Storm as the winners of this clash.
