Essex had hoped to begin the new season of the Royal London One-Day Cup on a positive note after finishing 6th on the table last year. Unfortunately, things haven’t been going great for them so far. They are currently languishing at the bottom of the Group A table with just 1 point and a net run rate of -1.850. They will next take on Middlesex at the County Ground in Chelmsford on August 11. Middlesex haven’t had a great start either – they are in 7th place with 1 point as well and a net run rate of -0.484.

Essex’s first match of the season was against Lancashire, which was washed off due to rain. They suffered heavy defeats in their next two matches – by 168 runs against Nottinghamshire and by 4 wickets against Hampshire.
Essex’s batting has let them down this season. They were shot out for just 69 in their match against Nottinghamshire and could only manage 236-9 while batting first against Hampshire. Beau Webster’s 73 and Simon Harmer’s 68 against Hampshire have been the only bright spots for them so far.
All hope is not lost, though. Captain Tom Westley would have to lead by example. He was the team’s second-highest run-scorer, collecting 335 runs in 8 innings at an average of nearly 48. We are backing him to do well in this match.
All-rounder Simon Harmer, apart from providing quick cameos down the order, is also expected to deliver with his mesmerizing off-spin bowling.
Aaron Beard (6 wickets in 3 matches at 6.40) and Beau Webster (5 wickets in 3 matches at 6.37) are the other two bowlers who can be game-changers for the team.

Middlesex’s only completed game this season resulted in an 18-run loss to Hampshire. Their next match against Surrey at Radlett was washed out without a ball being bowled.
With regular white-ball skipper Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden both away on The Hundred duty, skipper Mark Stoneman has a big responsibility on his shoulders. The 36-year-old left-hander will have to make sure he provides the team with quick starts, to lay the platform for bigger hitters like John Simpson and Luke Hollman.
Joe Cracknell underperformed last year, but has started on a positive note, scoring 64 off 71 balls versus Hampshire. Sam Robson, the team’s No.3 batter, had a memorable last season, where he ended up as Middlesex’s second-highest run-scorer with 469 runs in 8 matches at an average of 67. He is expected to deliver in this game.
Ryan Higgins’ exceptional 78 off 53 balls versus Hampshire has been the highlight of Middlesex’s campaign so far. He has a strike rate of 100.53 in List A cricket and can be the game-changer for the team this year in the middle order. The batting all-rounder is also a useful medium-fast bowler and can be handy for the team during the middle overs.
Middlesex’s bowling otherwise looks rather tepid on paper. In their previous game, only Luke Hollman, with his spell of 2-45, could make a little impact. The leg-spinner was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker last year, and he has an even bigger responsibility this time.

The pitch at Chelmsford is typically great for batting, with little help for the seam bowlers in the first half. As the match goes on, batting becomes difficult, and both spinners and seam bowlers will come into play. Since this is a fresh pitch, expect it to be full of runs. The overcast conditions could help the seamers get some movement.
The weather in Chelmsford during the match will be cloudy and warm.
In the 2022 edition of the Royal London One-Day Cup, there were three totals of over 300 posted at County Ground in just four matches, all of them by the team batting first. The highest score was 341 by Essex against Glamorgan. The team batting first in this match should look to set a target of around 320 runs.
Last year, four matches were played at County Ground in Chelmsford and all of them were won by the team that batted first. This indicates that the team batting first has an advantage at this venue. The team winning the toss in this match is almost certain to bat first.
Essex has won 3 of the last 5 matches they have played against Middlesex. Both teams have had a poor start to the season and will be eager to get back to winning ways. Despite being at the bottom of the table, Essex will be hopeful of a turnaround. They bat deep and will fancy their chances on this flat pitch. Middlesex has a pretty good batting unit too, but their bowling looks thin. We feel Essex will dominate this contest
