Last year’s finalists Gujarat Titans take on IPL heavyweights and perennial favourites Mumbai Indians in the fifth match of the tournament. With both teams carrying a well-balanced squad and evenly matched, this game will be the most anticipated contest in the first round of matches and is likely to attract a lot of attention.
Hardik Pandya, the GT captain last year, jumped ship pre-season and will be leading Mumbai Indians in this tournament. And that’d be a bit unusual to see for the fans of the home team. The Mumbai Indians will expect him to replicate the kind of success he had with Gujarat Titans, winning his first final as captain and ending up as a runner-up the next. In the opposite camp, Shubman Gill has a big boots to fill. They made two finals under Pandya and will be hoping Gill takes them to the third straight final this season.
Featuring some of the best names going around in the T20 circuit, namely Ishan Kishan, Rashid Khan, David Miller, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tim David, this match promises to have all the ingredients for a gripping contest.

Only two seasons have ed since their inception, and Gujarat Titans are already a force to be reckoned with in the tournament. Qualifying to the finals two out of two times is a feat in itself. They won it the first time but came excruciatingly close to making it two in a row only to be denied by CSK batsman Ravindra Jadeja who scored 10 off 2 to pull off a heist.
Batting looks well-organized with Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha opening the attack. The inclusion of Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai and late-order hitter Shahrukh Khan has added great depth to the batting, which also features David Miller and Vijay Shankar.
The loss of Mohammed Shami is a big talking point but they’ve a good variety in their attack that suits the conditions on offer here, with the likes of Rashid Khan, Umesh Yadav, Sai Sudarshan in the mix. It’d be interesting to see how the in-form left arm pacer Spencer Johnson goes about his business in the IPL. Scintillating performances in The Hundred and the BBL earned him a national call up, putting him on the radar for the scouts to see his talent.

Pre-season buzz around Mumbai Indians hit a new high following the change in leadership. The new captain Hardik Pandya and the former captain Rohit Sharma wouldn’t have enjoyed being in the limelight for the wrong reasons and they’d be hoping a win in their first game would put to bed the speculations about ongoing rifts in the team.
With the captaincy burden off his shoulders, Rohit Sharma has only one thing to focus on: to get his team off to a flying start alongside pocket dynamo Ishan Kishan. Even if they fail, they’ve plenty of batting ammunition in the sheds namely T20 player of the year Suryakumar Yadav (SKY), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and the explosive batters Tim David, Mohammad Nabi and Romario Shepherd to come down the order.
The bowling attack looks a little weaker compared to last year, and with Jason Behrendorff and Dilshan Madushanka missing this season due to an injury, it looks like Jasprit Bumrah will pair up with Gerald Coetzee to lead the MI pace attack. Piyush Chawla will take up the spin bowling duties alongside all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.
They’ve plenty of talented options on stand-by so it’d be interesting to see what combination they’re opting for. But the fifth bowler needs to play to his matchups well and bowl with discipline to avoid leaking runs.

The Ahmedabad surface was batting-friendly last year and one of the high-scoring venues of the tournament. The average first-innings total was a shade above 190 across the eight group stage games and the wicket in the final was a belter too. No doubt the pitch will play in a similar manner for this match, the forecast of which looks nice and clear. Warm and dry afternoon weather is likely to give way to a cooler evening, making the conditions great for a game of cricket.

Average TurnThis match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Titans have hosted Mumbai Indians twice here, with the hosts emerging winners on both occasions — with a margin of 55 runs and 62 runs. Getting up to an above-200 total in both matches allowed the hosts to put the visitors under the pump during the chase and they faltered.
Teams clearly prefer putting runs on the board at this venue . Last season, teams batting first crossed 200 five times, with 233 being the highest score. Expect the team winning the toss to choose batting unless the conditions are really dewy.
Mumbai Indians know Gujarat Titans are a different beast at home. They’ll throw everything they’ve got to breach the fortress but our guess is that they’ll come up short in the end. Gujarat Titans to win.
