Tournament: | Duleep Trophy, 2024 |
Format: | test |
Venue: | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, India |
Toss Prediction: | To Bat |
Weather: | 23.2°C|Partly cloudy |
Several Indian A listers will be in action again nearly two months after the World T20 final, as domestic cricket takes centre stage with the Duleep Trophy. Also playing alongside will be the test hopefuls who’ll be eager to show their wares and make an impression on the national selectors after having spent enough time waiting in the wings. As for the tournament, the format hasn’t changed. Four teams will be battling it out for red ball honours. However, for a change, the teams do not represent any zone this year and will be just called India A, B, C and D. The first match will see India A taking on India B at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka. And it’s going to be great fun watching the likes of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, go head to head against Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja etc.
Gill, the vice-captain of the national set up, will look at this series as a dress rehearsal for the Bangladesh tests which are round the corner. He’ll skipper a side that includes the likes of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal.
Regulars in the Indian red ball side once, both Karnataka batters have fallen out of favour and will be determined to put on a strong show to find their way back into the side. Agarwal scored 193 runs at 48.25 in two games last year and will be looking to make a mark this time too. Dhruv Jurel, too, did have some impact in the middle with the bat, scoring 46 and 25 the two times he had a chance to bat.
Riyan Parag had a rough time last season and will be looking to make amends, while KL Rahul, who didn't take part last year, will be determined to bat well and make a big score.
The bowling department has all the bases covered, with Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Prasidh Krishna offering seam and swing options. Kuldeep Yadav will be the lead spinner, with Riyan Parag and Tilak Varma expected to him with some tidy overs of spin through the middle overs just to give their main bowlers some room to rest and recover between spells.

Leading the campaign for India B this season will be Abhimanyu Easwaran, the Uttar Pradesh player. Having led India A for a few seasons now, Easwaran will not find it challenging to lead this side which also features skilful batsmen who’ve made their mark at the highest level like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant among others.
Jaiswal didn’t have the best of IPL this year, and had to spend the whole T20 world cup waiting on the sidelines. He’ll be looking at this brief stint as an opportunity to get back in the grind, with a number of tests lined up over the next few months. This will be Pant’s first major red ball tournament following his long injury layoff, as he chose to ease himself back in through white ball cricket.
Sarfaraz Khan, who impressed against England earlier this year, will look to score runs and solidify his place in the national setup. He’ll be playing alongside his younger brother Musheer Khan, who is an exciting talent. Bowling-wise, they’ve got great quality in both spin and pace departments.
Bowling all-rounders Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja will be up for a hard toil in the placid Bengaluru wicket whereas local RCB players Mohd Siraj and Yash Dayal will be excited about returning to their home ground clad in white though.

The Bengaluru wicket, given its pace and bounce and small dimensions, will no doubt favour the batters if it behaves as expected. The outfield here is electric fast and it’ll be hard stopping the boundaries. Regarded as spinners’ nightmare, this wicket has a lot to offer to pace bowlers especially if they’re ready to bend their backs. With Bengaluru, there’s always an outside chance of showers intervening, and it looks like the weather might affect the game at some point on Day 2 and Day 3 if the forecast is anything to go by.

Average TurnThe match will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. 2 of the 3 matches last year ended with the team batting first winning comfortably.
On a wicket as flat as Bengaluru, captain winning the toss will have no second thoughts batting first. This is one of those venues where teams have had a lot of success having a first crack with the bat in helpful conditions.
India B are a good side, but India A has most of their bases covered with some good quality in both bowling and batting. Their batting unit can handle pace and spin adeptly, and if the wicket is flat it’ll be hard to tie them down once they get going. Team A to win.
We are backing India A as winners of this contest.
