The weekend is here, and we have a number of exciting fixtures, of which this clash, in particular, between Kent and Somerset is of interest to many. Both teams come into this game having won and lost a game each, however Kent will be ecstatic about returning to their base for the first home opener of the season.
Somerset didn't begin their title defence the way they'd have liked but they will fancy playing well and sealing a victory against an opposition that it has a slight edge over in the last five encounters: Somerset has won three while Kent clinched two victories.
It's crucial to note that Somerset secured victories in the two most recent clashes and are starting to get a bit of momentum against Kent. However, at 14-9, the overall head-to-head record is still slightly skewed towards Kent, but Somerset's recent wins and close margins suggest we could be in for a tight contest.

With a win and a loss from two matches, Kent are off to a shaky start but their demolition of Middlesex in the first match has just about allowed them to hold on to the second place in the South Group table. Their Net Run Rate (NRR) shot up after a humungous 98 run victory in the opener and a close defeat to Hampshire hasn’t dented it much, with Kent comfortably placed second on the table with a healthy net run rate of 2.396 ¬ the best in the group.
Zak Crawley and Ben-Drummond have been excellent with the bat at the top of the order, with both going at over 150 SR. They’d want to bat deep and score big in the matches to come, and a return to their home ground could just be the inspiration they’ve been looking for. Joe Denly masterminded the brilliant chase in the first match, but couldn’t contribute much to the score in the second.
Sam Billings hasn’t done much either, with 43 runs from a couple of innings in the middle. Matt Parkinson has spearheaded the pace battery week, picking up 5 wickets in two games so far. Other bowlers have found it difficult to follow his lead, especially Xavier Bartlett from Australia who had an excellent BBL last year that led to hm earning a maiden call-up to the national side.

Current champions Somerset defeated Essex again in what was the reprise of last year’s finale, but a 57-run defeat to Surrey ensued pushing them to the eighth place on the South Group table. With one win and one defeat from their two matches and a poor NRR of -1.164, Somerset are going to have to get a move on quickly if they want to stop their campaign veering off track. But it is a good thing that they are facing Kent, an opposition that they have started dominating of late.
They got the better of Kent twice last season and will head into this match with their confidence sky-high. Tom Abell and Will Smeed are among the runs for Somerset, but the latter’s runs have come at a much faster clip at more than two runs a ball with him scoring boundaries of the 35% of the balls he faces. Lewis Gregory, who bludgeoned two boundaries and four sixes, in his quickfire 44 is also looking dangerous.
Tom Kohler-Core is and Tom Banton, who reached the mark of 3000 runs in all T20 competitions, are slowly easing into rhythm as well. Riley Meredith has used his express pace to tie down opposition batsmen, while Ben Green and Lewis Gregory have been more effective with the ball picking up useful wickets not without leaking runs though.

The surface here at Canterbury may not be a high scoring one- only 3 scores of 200+ in 3 years. But batsmen do get value for shots and bowlers do find some purchase from the pitch. The ball does tend to stop coming on to the bat as the match wears on, so scoring quick runs in the powerplay would be a clear objective for both teams. The weather forecast is good for the match with no threat of rain, but it might get a little windy and cloudy in phases.
The match will be held at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury. Somerset have been successful in three of their most recent encounters against Kent at this ground, so they’ll be pleased about playing here.
Historically, chasing at the Spitfire Ground has proven slightly challenging. Teams batting first tend to have a better win record, with 13 wins from 22 matches across three seasons. This means winning the toss and electing to bat could be a vital strategic decision for either side.
The recent contests were really competitive and too close to call, where neither side has been able to completely overpower the other. But we are hoping Somerset will put on a show and walk away with a win from this encounter.
We are backing Somerset as winners of this contest.
