We are backing Quetta Gladiators to win this match.

A look at the overall head to head suggests that the Quetta Gladiators have the Karachi Kings’ number. Prior to now, these two teams have met each other 16 times in the Pakistan Super League, of which Quetta has won a whopping 11 times versus the 5 wins that Karachi has managed. What’s worse, the Karachi Kings’ recent form against the Quetta Gladiators doesn’t inspire much confidence either. They finished on the losing end in 4 out of their most recent 5 encounters, with their lone win coming three seasons ago.
However, Karachi will be hoping their past performances won’t determine how they’ll go against Quetta in this match. They are up against a buoyant Quetta outfit which has brushed past 3 of its 4 oppositions on its way to the second position on the table. Having lost their last match to Islamabad United, who lost thrice in a row, the Kings will not be particularly pleased with their performance going into this match.

A new-look Kings outfit was thoroughly beaten at home. With James Vince missing the game due to an illness, Captain Shan Masood and Tim Seifert went out to open. Both of them struggled to find fluency up top, and, as a result, Karachi couldn’t get a move on early in the innings. Leus du Plooy showed great urgency and composure, anchoring the innings with a solid knock of 24 runs before he perished.
Seasoned campaigner Shoaib Malik’s stay at the crease was short-lived with him returning to pavilion for just 6 runs after a mix up with the big West Indian Kieron Pollard. Reaffirming his status as a T20 behemoth with another scintillating innings, KP looked poised to reach a half-century but had to settle for 48 in the end. Irfan Khan played a good hand, providing brilliant lower down the order to take their total to a respectable score. But a total below 170 never looked threatening with the bowling attack that the Kings had at their disposal.
The spin duo Mohammad Nawaz and Shoaib Malik operated with control and sent down 8 economical overs to keep the pressure on. Tabraiz Shamsi couldn’t enjoy the same level of control and was hit out of the attack, with his three overs costing 34 runs. The pacers Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza went for runs, with the opposition batsmen taking full toll of their indisciplined bowling.

A defeat to table-toppers Multan Sultans was the first loss of the season for the Quetta Gladiators. They ran the Sultans close but couldn’t finish things off, which ended their three match winning streak.
Their batting clearly puts them at an advantage, with three of their batsmen Jason Roy, Saud Shakeel and Khawaja Nafay scoring over 100 runs in just 4 hits. Middle Order batsman Rilee Rossouw is not too far away with 96 runs from 4 appearances and West Indian Shane Rutherford has carried his good ball striking form from other leagues into PSL with some crucial contributions.
On the bowling front, spin duo Abrar Ahmed and Akeal Hosein have been excellent, picking up 13 wickets between them. They haven’t gone for too many runs either, with economy rates of 7.62 and 7.31 respectively. They would definitely need better penetration and striking from pacers Mohammad Wasim, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Hasnain though. The pacers have been up and down and need to give the team breakthroughs with the ball. We all know these pacers have the ability and skill to run through the opposition in each phases of the game.
And they’ll be looking to improve their form against the Kings, who have meekly surrendered in 4 of their recent 5 encounters.
Khawaja Nafay has scored 36, 9, 60, and 6 runs in PSL 2024. Since his promotion to the number three batting position, he has performed well, smashing over 30 runs in two of his last three innings. We back him to come good and score over 21.5 runs against the Karachi Kings.
The Quetta Gladiators' opening pair of Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel have been in top form this season. The Gladiators have averaged 57.5 runs in the powerplay overs, scoring over 50 runs in three out of their four matches. This clearly demonstrates their dominance in utilising the fielding restrictions. Given their recent form, we back the Quetta Gladiators to score over 49.5 runs in the first six overs against the Karachi Kings.

Karachi’s first home game this season was an indication of the surface and the conditions for batting here. At the end of the match, it seemed like both teams batted on different decks, with the Kings stumbling through to finish at 165, whereas the United, chasing 166 for a victory, romped home with 9 balls to spare. It did give an impression it would get better for batting in the second innings. Weather forecast looks clear so we should have a complete game of cricket.

Minimal TurnThis match will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi. This is the second match to be played here at this venue in this year’s PSL, with the home team losing the first one to Islamabad United.
In the first match played at the National Stadium in Karachi in 2024 PSL season, the aggregate score was 334 runs. The pitch is balanced, favouring both batsmen and bowlers. While the average total score at Karachi in T20 matches is 367, considering the form of both teams, we predict the total aggregate score to be over 332.5 runs.
In the fifteen games played at this year’s PSL, teams chasing have won 8. It could have been 11, had the teams showed better nerves to close out the three games in which the margin of defeat were less than 9. Both teams would love chasing here, given 2 of their recent wins have come batting second though.
Quetta Gladiators have been in brilliant form with the bat and ball this season. They demonstrated how to play as a team and ended up on the winning side in three of their four encounters. Faced with an underperforming Karachi side, they’ll be looking to assert their dominance once again, pick up a win and establish their position at the top. In contrast, the Kings fortunes are on the wane and they have to play a better brand of cricket to go deep in the tournament. Team Quetta to take the win.
