After no results in their first two matches due to rain, last year’s runner-up Lancashire finally made their presence felt in the Royal London One-Day Cup 2023. They defeated Kent by a massive 125 runs to climb up to 4th place in the Group A points table. They will next take on Leicestershire tomorrow at Old Trafford. Leicestershire have made a great start to their campaign, taking second place after winning two of their first three matches.

Lancashire Preview

In their first match of the Royal London One-Day Cup 2023, Lancashire were well-placed for a comfortable win. In a rain-reduced affair at Sedbergh, they scored 270-7 from 36 overs and reduced Essex to 23-2 from 6 overs. Unfortunately, no further play was possible because of rain. Their next match against Yorkshire was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Lancashire finally got their chance to play a full match in their previous encounter. Batting first against Kent at Blackpool, they posted a formidable total of 328-5 and bowled them out for just 203.

Josh Bohannon was the star for Lancashire with his outstanding knock of 105, along with opener George Bell, who scored 71 off 97 deliveries. Dane Vilas (51 off 37 balls) and George Balderson (57 off 28 balls) provided the finishing touches. Vilas is now striking it at 143 in this series and can be a game-changer for Lancashire in the middle-order.

Captain Keaton Jennings has had a quiet series so far, but don’t count him out. He topped the team’s batting charts last year with nearly 400 runs and a big knock is just around the corner.

On the bowling front, Jack Blatherwick has stood out so far, taking 5 wickets in 2 matches at an economy of 4.69. We are also backing Tom Bailey, the team’s second-most successful bowler last season, to come good in this match.

Lancashire Predicted Playing XI:

Keaton Jennings (c), Josh Bohannon, George Bell, Dane Vilas, George Balderson, George Lavelle, Matthew Hurst (wk), Thomas Aspinwall, Tom Bailey, Jack Blatherwick, Jack Morley

Leicestershire Preview

Two big wins, including a colossal 264-run victory against Kent, followed by a defeat against Nottinghamshire—that has been Leicestershire’s journey so far in the Royal London One-Day Cup 2023.

South African middle-order batter Wiaan Mulder has been the team’s best batter this year, milking 218 runs in just 3 innings at a strike rate of 121. He has scored three consecutive 50s and looks in incredible touch, picking up where he left off last season. While the top-order hasn’t contributed much so far, Mulder has kept the innings together.

Peter Handscomb has lived up to his name as well, scoring 165 runs in 3 matches at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 113.79.

Louis Kimber (103 runs in 3 innings at a strike rate of 145) is another batter worth backing. He has been keeping the run rate up with his big hitting and will be eager to make an impact in this match.

In the bowling department, right-arm quick Chris Wright (5 wickets in 3 matches at 4.75) has been consistently good. The other bowlers have been among the wickets as well. Josh Hull, for instance, has gone to the top of the team’s bowling charts after his spell of 4-43 in the previous game against Nottinghamshire.

Leicestershire Predicted Playing XI:

Rishi Patel, Soloman Budinger, Lewis Hill (c), Peter Handscomb (wk), Colin Ackermann, Wiaan Mulder, Louis Kimber, Tom Scriven, Roman Walker, Chris Wright, Josh Hull

Weather Conditions

The pitch at Old Trafford is a typical English wicket - great for batting for the most part with plenty of help for the seam bowlers. By the second innings, the ball doesn’t come on as nicely to the bat, making things difficult for the batters. This is a day-night match and the ball move around more under lights.

The weather in Manchester during the match will be partly sunny and pleasantly warm.

The highest totals at Old Trafford in the last three seasons are 367, 257, and 249-4, respectively. The team batting first in this match should look to set a target of around 270–280 runs at least.

Toss: To Bat

Since 2018, there have been 11 completed matches of the One-day Cup played at Emirates Old Trafford. Out of those, 8 have been won by the team batting first. This suggests that the team batting first has an advantage here.

Lancashire has won 3 of their last 5 matches against Leicestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Both teams have strong batting units, but Lancashire’s in-form lower middle order can make the difference in this match. Dane Vilas and George Balderson have been scoring quick runs in the second half of the innings, which could prove detrimental here. Leicestershire’s bowling, however, gives them the edge in the encounter.

Back Leicestershire as the winners of this contest.
