The CSA T20 Challenge began in the 2003/4 season and has grown into one of the most recognisable non-franchise T20 domestic leagues across the world. And even though South Africa now has the SA20 in January of each year, the CSA T20 Challenge remains an exciting tournament which draws crowds and is played along traditional team lines.
From the 2016/17 season onwards, both Lions and Titans have won the tournament three times each and we can expect both to be finishing in the top four and qualifying for the knockout stage in this game.
T20 cricket is always exciting and there is plenty of anticipation about the start of this year's competition. Lions won by eight wickets with 20 balls remaining in the semi-final in April earlier this year so Titans will be desperate to exact revenge in this tournament opener on Friday evening.

With a top four of Reeza Hendricks, keeper-batter Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma, it was no surprise to see Lions go all the way to the final and win the tournament in 2024.
Once again, with a batting line-up of such talent and experience, Lions are likely to be a tough team to stop when they are at the crease. Equally, at number five in the final last year was Wiaan Mulder who hit 55 not out from 26 balls as Lions got over the winning lion with seven wickets and 14 balls remaining.
Bowling is also an area where Lions cause plenty of problems for opposition sides! Only Mulder, of the six bowlers used, didn't pick up a wicket in the 2023 final and the spin duo of Bjorn Fortuin along with Nqabayomzi Peter are likely to enjoy this pitch.
One of the most experienced batters in the CSA T20 Challenge cup, Zubayr Hamza played only three matches last season and scored 90 runs. He is one of the leading run-scorers in domestic cricket and in the absence of the senior pro's, Hamza has the additional responsibility of taking the lead with the bat and we back him to come good in today's match.

There is plenty of talent in the Titans squad with a potent mixture of youth and experience. The key for Neil Brand's side this season will be to find consistency throughout the group stage and then ensure they are playing at their top level in time for the knockouts.
Rivaldo Moonsamy is a talented opening batter across all formats and he will be looking to build on his highest T20 score of 90 not out. In the semi-final last season against Lions, Jack Lees hit 64 not out, including ten fours and one six, and that pair will be key at the top of the order.
There are also many runs in the middle and lower order with former South African and Namibian international David Wiese alongside Corbin Bosch both capable of making quick runs.
With the ball, Titans have most bases covered and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi should enjoy the pace, turn and bounce available at this ground.
The elegant left hand batter scored 209 runs in 12 matches last season, averaging 34.83, he bats in the middle order and scores at a quick rate. Last season he was the fourth highest run-scorer for the Lions. We back Neil Brand to start his campaign on a good note and score over 18.5 runs in the 1st match.

Although it looks set to be a warm day in Johannesburg, by the time this game gets underway in the early evening, the temperature will have dropped to the mid-20s. There will be low humidity with no chance of any rain interrupting this tournament opener.
The Wanderers Stadium has long been the place in South Africa for a quick and bouncy wicket and we are sure to see the same in this match. The ball will come onto the bat at a good pace but that should be good news for the talented batters at the top of the order. Whoever bats first will be looking to post a total around 195.
Batting first was the most successful way to go at the Wanderers Stadium in last season's CSA T20 Challenge so we predict that both captains will go out for the toss wanting to bat first in this match.
Two strong teams with excellent recent records in this tournament are going head to head in this match. We are expecting an exciting contest but are predicting a victory for Lions who are defending their title.
We are backing Lions to win this match!
