The Canada T20 series is poised for an exciting finish, with Nepal up against Oman at Maple Leaf North West Ground in King City. Both teams have not had the best of form in the recent matches leading up to this series, with 4 defeats in five matches.
Nepal thumped Oman by 37 runs a couple of days ago to collect their only win, whereas Oman downed table toppers Canada by a massive 8 wicket margin to bring up their lone victory in recent five matches.
Nepal need to win this match to put themselves in the top spot, although Canada can still take it back by winning their last encounter against Oman coming up in a day’s time. From Oman’s standpoint, winning the next two matches will take them to six points and make them deserving winners though.
Nepal has played 21 matches this year and managed to finish on the winning side on just 8 occasions.
With 12 losses and a no result, they’re clearly not playing great cricket consistently to force results to go their way.
On the road since March, Nepal has played 16 matches in that time with just 6 wins to show for it. Despite a good start that saw them collect wins in Mong Kok and Al Amerat, their tour to the Americas hasn’t gone to plan. Their momentum stalled all of a sudden they’ve been badly searching for a win ever since April. And they finally got that against Oman when they defeated them by a massive 37-run margin the other day.
But they couldn’t quite follow it up with another strong showing against Canada, who picked up a well-orchestrated 4 wicket victory yesterday.
Anil Sah and Aasif Sheikh have been in decent touch this series, scoring over 130 runs between them. Sah’s 77 runs from 3 matches have come at better average and better strike rate than Aasif Sheikh’s tally of 65 runs.
The performance of the middle order has been average so far but players like Gulsan Jha has shown flashes of brilliance with a well-compiled 40 and 23 in his two hits. On the bowling front, Sandeep Lamichhane has been excellent, picking up 6 wickets from 3 matches at a remarkable economy and strike rate. Only Sompal Kami has looked like he could cause trouble to the batters, while the rest of the attack hasn’t inspired confidence.
Anil Sah, Aasif Sheikh(w), Kushal Malla, Rohit Paudel(c), Kushal Bhurtel, Gulsan Jha, Dipendra Singh Airee, Karan KC, Sandeep Lamichhane, Lalit Rajbanshi, Sompal Kami.
Oman picked up their first win in six matches by defeating hosts Canada with an impressive bowling performance yesterday, ending their victory drought finally.
It took a complete team effort to get the job done though, with each bowler to have sent down an over picking up at least a wicket to bowl out Canada for a paltry 106. Special mention to Captain Aqib Ilyas (27 wickets from 19 games this year) who bowled brilliantly to pick up two wickets, and helped himself to a 50 ( 461 runs from as many games), showing his wares as an all-rounder.
A chase of 107 on that wicket could have gone either way, but the talented Ilyas and his opening partner Kashyap Prajapati dropped the anchor and shaved 35 runs off the target inside five overs before Prajapati was sent back to the hut run out for 13 off 11. Shoaib Khan with 75 runs from 2 games has outdone a player of Ilyas’ calibre, announcing himself as a player for the future.
Bowling-wise, Zeeshan Maqsood and Keleemullah haven’t quite hit their stride yet. They need to step up and apply more pressure on the opposition to take wickets regularly. With two matches still to go, Oman will be positive about replicating their performance. But it’s been hard work for Oman, who have won 9 out of 14 games at home but struggled to win one away from home since June when the T20 world cup started.
Kashyap Prajapati, Aqib Ilyas(c), Shoaib Khan, Ayaan Khan, Zeeshan Maqsood, Khalid Kail, Pratik Athavale(w), Fayyaz Butt, Kaleemullah, Rafiullah, Shakeel Ahmed.
The surface here has allowed for a good balance between bat and ball. True to a sporting wicket, batsmen have been able to score runs and compile totals north of 175 while bowlers have also come into play and skittled out teams for less than 110 runs on board. By bringing both batsmen and bowlers into play, the wicket has offered up some exciting contests this season. The weather forecast for this game is expected to be normal, perfect for a game of T20.
The match is all set to take place at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground, King City. International T20 cricket has returned to this venue after 16 years, which hosted T20 Canada in 2008 a tri series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
It’s hard to tell whether toss has been a significant factor deciding the outcome of the match, with the first two matches going in favour of the team batting first and the next two to the chasing team. Our guess is that the captain winning the toss would like to bowl first and restrict the opposition to a total that his batters can chase down.
We expect Oman to dominate proceedings in this contest. Their bowlers looked sharp and switched on against the hosts and the batsmen finished things off in a canter. They’re hungry for a win and come into this match with their tail up.
We are backing Oman as winners of this contest.
