The second half of the County Division one championship gets underway with several teams in action later this week, and Nottinghamshire will be taking on Somerset in a crucial fixture.
The result of this match could pretty much could set the tone for the remainder of the competition for both teams.
Hosts Nottinghamshire have managed one win, four draws and two losses so far in the competition whereas visitors Somerset have managed to draw four games, but they’re third on the points table courtesy two wins and a loss.
They’ll be come into this game hoping to narrow the widening gap between them and the top two teams namely Surrey and Essex.
The top order is in fine form for Nottinghamshire this season, with Joe Clarke (629 runs from 7 games with three centuries) and Haseeb Hameed (549 runs from 7 games) piling on the runs this season. Ben Slater and Lyndon James have chipped in with some handy runs with James 106* proving effective against a Hampshire attack at Nottingham.
New Zealander Will Young has made a mark in the five matches he has been a part of this season, scoring 271 runs at a healthy average of 45.16 including a daddy hundred of 174*. Bowling-wise, Dilon Pennington averages four wickets a game with his 24 scalps coming from 6 games.
Former South African players Dane Paterson with 17 wickets from 6 games has troubled batsmen with some impressive spell at several instances in the season.
And Calvin Harrison with his leg-breaks has extracted spin whenever the deck has something to offer. Nottinghamshire will be hoping that a win against Somerset in their backyard will help them quickly rebound from the 5-wicket loss they suffered at the hands of Hampshire.
Haseeb Hameed (c), Ben Slater, Will Young, Joe Clarke (wk), Tom Moores, Jack Haynes, Lyndon James, Calvin Harrison, Olly Stone, Dillon Pennington, Dane Paterson.
Four draws to kick off their campaign this season didn’t do Somerset any good, but they completed two victories back to back. The 3-wicket win over Essex at home in a low scoring encounter stands out in their campaign so far, because they had to produce the highest score of the match in the fourth innings to claim victory. They looked like they were on a roll, but Durham routed out them convincingly to hand them their first loss of the season and an innings defeat at that.
It’s a cause for concern that they’ve failed to sur 200 runs in an innings recently in four out of six occasions. Tom Lammonby leads the batting charts with an impressive 546 runs from 7 games, including a ton and four half centuries. Tom Banton and Matt Renshaw have also contributed consistently towards their batting cause, with close to 830 runs between them.
All-rounders Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton haven’t had the impact they’d have liked to have on the batting front, and that’s an area for improvement if anything. But their bowling has been as good as ever, with Gregory ing for 20 scalps from 7 games and Overton 15 from 5.
Miguel Pretorius hasn’t done any worse, even though his 14 wickets have come at an ordinary strike rate of 67 balls. Somerset will be focussing on adding stability and depth to their batting which has looked a little fragile at times of late.
Matt Renshaw, Sean Dickson, Tom Lammonby, Andrew Umeed, James Rew (wk), Tom Banton, Lewis Gregory (c), Craig Overton, Migael Pretorius, Josh Davey, Jack Leach.
Batsmen reap their rewards on this surface when they dig in and apply themselves to the task. Similarly, bowlers come into the game especially when the pitch has a bit of spite early in the match. Overall this wicket allows for a good contest between bat and ball. The weather looks decent with no major rain threat whatsoever so a complete game without any loss of overs is in prospect.
This match will be played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in Nottinghamshire.
Teams chasing in the fourth innings have won the last two matches so batting last could be a viable option to consider for both captains as they stride out to the middle for toss.
Somerset will be eager to get back to winning ways while Nottinghamshire will be hell bent on denying them a crucial away victory. But given their overall balance and form of individual players, we think Somerset will take the win.
We are backing Somerset as winners of this contest.
