Nottinghamshire host table-toppers Surrey at Nottingham, as the Division One County Championship reaches its final leg.
Notts' plan to move up into the top tier of the table took a big dent, as they slipped to their third loss and first innings defeat of the season against Durham.
On the other hand, Surrey, the runaway leaders, pulled clear of the pack and consolidated their position at the top of the tree with another impressive performance against Lancashire at the Oval, their fourth win in five matches. Surrey, courtesy 7 wins and 2 draws, are comfortably ahead with a 35-point lead over second-placed Somerset. Nottinghamshire are currently sitting in the eighth spot perilously close to the ninth placed Lancashire.
With their title hopes gone, they’ll be eyeing to pick up some points from this game and move away from the bottom. Going by current form, Surrey are clear favourites to claim a victory in this fixture.
With just four rounds to go in the competition, Nottinghamshire have their work cut out. They need to win at least a couple if they are to progress through towards the top half of the table. A few defeats would allow the teams placed below to leapfrog Notts, pushing them to a situation where they get relegated to Division 2. Even a few draws won’t be enough seeing that all that they could manage was just the one win from their ten matches.
Batting-wise, some of their batsmen have been too good, especially Joe Clarke and Haseeb Hameed who have roughly 1583 runs between them. Ben Slater has plundered more than 650 runs this season, and Lyndon James and Jack Haynes have chalked up close to 450 runs each. However, such strong performances from the batsmen have not translated to resounding wins.
Their bowling unit have not fired as well as they’d like to, with Dillon Pennington, Lyndon James and Dane Patterson ing for a lion’s share of the wickets. The other bowlers have barely showed signs that they can run through the opposition batsmen with the ball, and as a result Nottinghamshire have never been able to close out the gap between their attack and those of the teams vying for the top spots.

Title favourites Surrey took one big step towards securing another championship by completing an innings victory against Lancashire over at the Kia Oval.
Rory Burns 227 in the second innings of the match nicely set things up for Surrey as they posted a massive 444/9 on board, achieving a 240-run lead. Lancashire couldn’t erase the deficit in their second inning and fell short by 63 runs.
Jordan Clark came away with a match haul of 7/100, while Conor Mckerr and Dan Worrall chipped in with crucial wickets in both innings. Clark’s remarkable performance helped him take his overall tally for the season to 32, still eight short of the leading wicket taker and teammate Dan Worrall.
With players like Kemar Roach, Cameron Steel coming and going, these three bowlers took it upon themselves to produce the goods with the ball, and they’ve delivered in a big way. Another hallmark of Surrey’s dominant performance this season is the manner in which their batsmen have backed their bowlers. Their batters showed great skill and application and built big partnerships to seize initiative.
Rory Burns and Dom Sibley, in particular, have batted long and made crucial runs up top. Their consistency offers confidence to batters coming down the order and allows them time to play themselves in.
Even with Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence leaving for national duty, their middle order still looks confident and solid with the likes of Will Jacks, Ben Foakes, Sam Curran and Sai Sudarshan in there. Surrey started the season well and have gotten better with each game, and they will only be hoping to end it with a bang.

Barring the dismal batting effort in the first game that saw the hosts fall apart to 80, the Trent Bridge wicket has helped batsmen a great deal. One 500+ total, two scores above 400, and five totals in excess of 300 is clear indication that the pitch has been conducive to stroke-making. Bowlers have had their moments here too, picking up 5 fifers and 7 four-fors on this wicket. Weather-wise, things are looking bright with sunny conditions forecast for most of the match.
The match is all set to happen at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Surrey last came visiting back in 2019, where they made two 225-ish scores seem too big for Nottinghamshire to tackle, winning by 167 runs. They had secured an innins victory the previous year.
Teams winning the toss and opting to bowl first have won and lost a game each, whereas teams opting to bat first have lost a match but managed to eke out draws on two occasion. We guess the captain winning the toss will decide to bat first in this fixture.
Surrey, all the way. Nottinghamshire are so off the pace and it’ll take a gargantuan effort from them with the bat and ball to hold up Surrey, which seems unlikely at the moment.
