The Marsh One Day Cup is back! Australia’s premier 50-over domestic tournament will begin its brand new season from this Sunday and will go on till the 1st of March 2025. Three-time defending champions Western Australia will take on last year’s runners-up New South Wales at Sydney on September 22 to kick-start the competition. Western Australia have had the better of their rivals in recent times and will begin as favorites for this clash.

New South Wales Preview

New South Wales will be hoping that their new one-day captain, several valuable recruits from other states, and the development of young talent will propel them toward trophy contention this season. Having been runners-up last season, they are confident in their ability to reach the finals again this year.

The return of Nic Maddinson and the g of Josh Philippe have greatly bolstered the strength of the batting unit.

Daniel Hughes, who amassed over 450 runs last season at an average of 56.62, is another to watch out for along with Moises Henriques.

Among the fast-bowling contingent, Will Salzmann will play a pivotal role. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha didn’t have the best of seasons last time but will be looking to be the team’s main weapon this time around.

However, the bowling unit does look a little short on experience and this will play into Western Australia’s hands.

New South Wales Predicted Playing XI:

Daniel Hughes, Nic Maddinson, Josh Philippe (wk), Moises Henriques, Oliver Davies, Jack Edwards (c), Hayden Kerr, Chris Green, Jack Nisbet, Will Salzmann, Tanveer Sangha

Western Australia Preview

Western Australia will be looking to make it four titles in a row as they begin the new season of the One-Day Cup. It will be the one-day tournament's first ever four-peat if they do it.

The golden era for Western Australia has led to its rise as a dominant force in domestic cricket, especially in producing ready-made international players. Mahli Beardman is the latest talent making waves, possibly ing recent international debutants such as Cooper Connolly, Aaron Hardie, and Lance Morris.

Captain Sam Whiteman is on the mend from a finger injury and is unlikely to be available for the first few games. In his place, Ashton Turner will lead the side.

Cameron Bancroft, D'Arcy Short, and Hilton Cartwright will bolster the middle order.

Meanwhile, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, and Jason Behrendorff form a formidable pace-bowling trio, while Ashton Agar will take care of the spin bowling duties.

Western Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Sam Fanning, D'Arcy Short, Cameron Bancroft (wk), Hilton Cartwright, Ashton Turner (c), Nick Hobson, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Lance Morris

Weather Conditions

The Cricket Central ground in Sydney hasn’t seen many matches, but it is expected to behave like a typical Australian surface. There should be really good bounce and carry for the seam bowlers. The ball will come at a nice height for the batters and once they settle down, they can cash in. Spinners won’t get much help here.

The weather in Sydney during the game will be partly sunny and pleasant.

NSW vs WAC Pitch Report

Last season in the Marsh Cup, only one match was played at the Cricket Central ground – the final of the tournament between Western Australia and New South Wales. After batting first, New South Wales were bowled out for just 169 on a spicy wicket and Western Australia chased the target down with 5 wickets to spare in 33.2 overs.

Toss: To Bowl

The last match played at the Cricket Central ground in Sydney saw the chasing side win quite comfortably. We reckon both captains will be looking to field first here.

This is the clash of the titans. Western Australia have won three of their last five games against New South Wales in the One-Day Cup, including the all-important final last year. Both teams are missing some star players and won’t be at full strength. However, the defending champions do look to have the better balanced squad. New South Wales have a strong batting unit, but their bowling attack doesn’t appear to be quite as potent. We are hence backing Western Australia to dominate this clash.

Western Australia are favorites to win this match.
