North West and Boland will square off in a key contest in the CSA T20 Challenge at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom this weekend.

Disappointed by a finish in the bottom half last season, North West have begun things well with two wins from two matches to get their campaign underway. Sitting in the second spot at the moment, they have Boland nipping at their heels with one win from their two matches.

Boland’s first match this season was washed out, but they demonstrated their bowling acumen defending a low total and going on to win the one-over eliminator to put their first points on the board. Boland, having lost both matches to North West last season earlier this year, will be hoping to turn things around and add two more points to the tally.

North West Preview

After an underwhelming performance in the last edition, North West has kicked off this year’s CSA T20 competition with two back to back victories. They’re on a roll, and would be more than pleased to take on Boland a team they’ve had the better off twice last season. Stringing together a few more victories at this juncture would put them in the box seat to finish the group stages strong and qualify for the knockouts.

Rubin Hermann has been particularly severe on Boland bowlers, with 144 runs from 2 hits at a strike rate of 167.44 and a high score of 96*. Lesego Senokwane has had a couple of good outings against Boland recently, playing an anchor role in the middle order.

Wihan Lubbe, with scores of 55 and 58, has kicked off his campaign well and so has Janneman Malan with a useful 40 in the first match and a well-compiled 26 in the second.

The Jansen brothers, Duan and Marco, have proven more than valuable as all-rounders and make it to the starting XI of most teams with the skill they possess.

The left arm pacers lead the bowling pack but have found good in right arm pacer Mungroo, too. Leggie Seleka, who has had Boland batsmen dance to his tunes in their recent meetings, has started well this season.

North West Predicted Playing XI:

Rubin Hermann, Meeka eel Prince (wk), Raynard van Tonder, Wihan Lubbe, Ruan de Swardt, Migael Pretorius, Lesiba Ngoepe, Senuran Muthusamy (c), Bamanye Xenxe, Caleb Seleka, Irvin Modimokoane.

Rocks Preview

Boland started things off with a win. They scored 141 which as they found out eventually was just enough to settle for a tie with the Knights in regulation time and force the match into a one-over eliminator.

Credit to their bowlers for not letting the opposition run off to a good start chasing a par total. Imran Manack kept things tight early on, and Keith Dudgeon slipped through few tight overs and picked up a couple of wickets to put a lid on the scoring rate. It took a complete team effort and they had to work hard to ensure the game didn’t slip get away from them. Boland need better starts and powerful finishes with the bat to go deep in the competition.

Their batting has lacked explosivity up top and they’ve been looking for players that could get them off to a flying start. Apparently, Grant Roelofsen's move from Dolphins is a good first step in that direction. The right-hand batsman was up and about with a quickfire 51 off 38 balls in his first ever game in Boland colors, doing his bit to set up a good platform for the incoming batters.

Clyde Fortuin, the wicketkeeper batsman, is another key player in their batting outfit that likes to score his runs fairly quickly. He was up and running with three boundaries and a six in the twelve balls he faced, but couldn’t convert that start into a big score. Ferisco Adams with over 275 runs in the past twelve months has been a rock in the middle order, but he has a tendency to get bogged down searching for runs and has often struggled upping the ante and finishing the innings with a flourish.

Rocks Predicted Playing XI:

Grant Roelofsen, Pieter Malan, Clyde Fortuin(w/c), Gavin Kaplan, Michael Copeland, Ferisco Adams, Keith Dudgeon, Shaun von Berg, Imran Manack, Ayabulela Gqamane, Siyabonga Mahima.

Weather Conditions

The Potchefstroom surface isn’t exactly high scoring, but batsmen who’ve the range and power game to score runs quickly have made bowlers pay here. Dewald Brevis ransacked 162 runs off 57 balls in a match here in 2022, where the total run aggregate went up to 501 runs.

And that’s not to say that bowlers don’t thrive in these conditions.

Fast bowlers with an extra yard of pace capable of extracting bounce have generally done well here. Bright and pleasant conditions are forecast for the match so hopefully it stays and the weather doesn’t play spoilsport.

NW vs BOL Pitch Report

The match is all set to be played at the Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. Grant Roelofsen was on fire for the Dolphins here, scoring 333 runs from 9 games in the 2022 season. He’d be happy to return to his favourite hunting ground, this time in Boland colours.

Toss: To Bowl

Toss hasn’t had a large effect on the outcomes of matches at this venue.

North West picked up a win in the last two encounters against Boland, after opting to field first so they’d be more than happy to stick to the blueprint and send Boland in to have a bat first.

Boland wouldn’t be thinking any differently. They’d look to unseat the hosts a touch by asking them to bat if the toss went their way.

Two wins in two matches has given North West a bit of a momentum, and they would fancy their chances of keeping this streak going coming up against Boland who still look far from convincing with their plans and execution especially with the bat through the middle overs.

We are backing North West as winners of this contest.
