The way this season started for Otago Volts, they must have felt very confident about progressing through to the next stage. Well, not so much now after the three consecutive defeats. They started the season with a massive win over Northern Districts by 175 runs. But it has been downhill since then for Otago Volts in the Ford Trophy 2024-25.
In their first match against Northern Districts, Otago Volts scored 316, batting first, thanks to a couple of half-centuries from Dale Phillips and Leo Carter. There were other handy contributions as well. Defending the total, the bowling unit did not allow Northern Districts to score at any stage. Matthew Bacon and Dean Foxcroft took three wickets each to help Otago Volts get a massive win over Northern Districts.
This was immediately followed by a massive defeat against Canterbury, where Otago Volts were bowled out for 103, chasing 343 in 50 Otago Volts. The following two games also ended in defeats: a four-wicket defeat against Auckland and a big 108-run defeat against Central Districts.
Matthew Bacon is the top cricket taker of the tournament with 10 wickets. Dale Philips and Captain Georgeson have done well with the bat and are the top two run scorers for the Volts so far. Otago Volts’ problems are with the batting. As long as their batting helps them put a good score on the board, the Volts have a decent powering attack that can win games against any good side.

Unlike Otago Volts, Wellington Firebirds started their season with a massive loss against Canterbury. However, they have come back strongly since then, winning two of the next three games - 1 no result. They are placed third in the points table with 11 points, just after Auckland and Canterbury at 12 points.
In the first game, Bennington Firebirds caught out cheaply for 129 runs against Canterbury, who chased it down with 6 wickets and 165 balls remaining. Brushing that defeat aside, Wellington Firebirds came back strongly in the game against Auckland. Bowling first, Wellington Firebirds bundled out Auckland for just 140 runs and chased it down with 20 overs to go. Thanks to opener Tim Robinson's not-out 72-run innings.
After a washout against Central Districts, batting came to the fore for the Firebirds, who scored a total of 248 batting first against Northern Districts. Muhammad Abbas scored top with a score of 79 from 70 balls with 12 fours and 1 six. A lot of other batters got starts, but no one could go on to make it big. In the end, 248 was too much for Northern Districts as they were all out in the 38th over for 199 runs. Peter Younghusband took five wickets for 42 runs. Keeping the good momentum going, the Wellington Firebirds must be looking for yet another win against the Otago Volts.

The weather on the match day at Dunedin’s University Oval is expected to be cool, with temperatures in the mid-teens Celsius. Known for its unpredictable weather, conditions could be partly cloudy with a chance of light rain showers.
The venue of the match is the University Oval, Dunedin. Established in 1920, it is a nice stadium with a capacity of around 6,000. University Oval is known for its picturesque setup. It hosted first Test match in 2008 between New Zealand and Bangladesh.
At the University Oval in Dunedin, teams winning the toss generally opted to bowl first since early morning conditions provide some assistance to seamers due to cool and humid weather. Batting becomes easier as the match progresses. The team winning the toss should bowl first here and capitalise when the batting becomes easier in the second half.
Wellington Firebirds have played some slow-scoring winners so far this season. Their bowling seems to be their strong suit, helping them come back strongly after the defeat first up. Otago Volts, on the other hand, have underperformed after a massive victory and thus look underconfident. We think the Firebirds have an upper hand in this game against the Otago Volts.
We predict that Wellington Firebirds will defeat Otago Volts.
