The ninth edition of the Women's Big Bash League is now up and running and we’ve already seen a few thrillers. Brisbane Heat Women are currently at the top of the table with two consecutive wins. Meanwhile, Perth Scorchers Women have won one and lost one and are in fourth place with 2 points. They will next take on Hobart Hurricanes Women at the W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth. Perth have already handed Hobart a heavy defeat in their season’s first match. That crushing loss has taken Hobart to last place. However, they have played just one game so far and have a chance to make amends.

Perth Scorchers Women have started their new season with a bang, winning their first match against Hobart by 98 runs and following it up with a terrific 50-run win over Brisbane Heat.
Captain Sophie Devine has led from the front and is the leading run-getter for Perth already with 101 runs in 2 innings at a strike rate of 174. It’s still early days, but this is a really good sign.
Perth would also look at Beth Mooney to deliver in this game. She topped the batting charts last season with 434 runs in 13 innings. She has been in pretty good form of late as well, having scored 356 runs in the last 10 matches at an average of 44.5. Mooney smashed a sparkling 60 off just 30 balls in Perth’s last game against Brisbane Heat, and we feel she will have an impact in this match too.
Perth have a balanced attack, with Alana King and Lilly Mills forming a menacing spin tandem. King has grabbed 14 wickets in her last 10 matches at an economy of 6.74.
Piepa Cleary went for 43 runs in her 3 overs in the previous game, but the right-arm medium pacer is a wicket-taker, and we expect a few wickets from her in this game.

Hobart Hurricanes had a horror start to their new season. Chasing a target of 187 against Perth Scorchers at Launceston, they were blanked out for just 88. It was a horrific batting performance, but Hobart would like to quickly put it aside and try to refocus on their campaign.
Heather Graham would have to lead from the front to inspire her troops. She was the third-highest run-getter on the team last year, with 258 runs in 12 innings.
Lizelle Lee (296 runs in 14 innings last season) is another batter to watch out for. The opening batter has a wealth of experience, and this is a tournament she has done well in in the past.
Hobart’s batting, though, does look a little thin on experience. If these two don’t click, they might struggle to put up a big total.
Despite retiring from international cricket in May, Shabnim Ismail remains a formidable force on the bowling front. Her recent performance just eight months ago in the T20 World Cup final against Australia, where she secured figures of 2 for 26, highlights her enduring excellence. Despite her underwhelming performance for the Renegades last summer, her track record in the WBBL tells a different story. Her instrumental role in Sydney Thunder's 2020 championship win, where she claimed a remarkable 2 for 12, including the crucial dismissals of her current Hurricanes captain, Villani, and Australia's captain, Meg Lanning, earned her the title of Player of the Match. Should she continue to be a formidable presence for the Hurricanes, their prospects look promising.
Also, watch out for Molly Strano. The experienced off-spinner was Hobart’s leading wicket-taker last season with 18 scalps in 14 innings. She has been bowling well of late and has grabbed 13 wickets in her last 10 matches.

The W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth is known to have one of the quickest and bounciest tracks in the world. Although for T20s, we expect a slightly better surface for batting, it should still offer plenty of bounce and movement for the seamers. Batters will enjoy the bounce too, but the lateral movement might make things difficult for them. Under lights, especially, the ball tends to move around considerably here. So the first 5-6 overs of both innings might see a few wickets fall.
The weather in Perth will be breezy and warm.
The average first innings score at the W.A.C.A. Ground in women’s domestic T20s is 134. The highest score posted at the venue is 199-0 by Sydney Sixers Women against Melbourne Stars Women in 2019. This will be the first match of the season to be played here, so the wicket will be fresh and hard. The team batting first should look to set a total of around 150-160 runs.
In recent years, the W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth has favored the chasing side more. Out of the 27 domestic women’s T20 matches played here, 16 have been won by the chasing side. Therefore, the toss winning team is likely to field first here.
Perth Scorchers Women have won three of the last five matches against Hobart Hurricanes Women, while Hobart has won only one; one match was abandoned. The last time the Hurricanes beat the Scorchers was in November 2021. Their disastrous start this year would have certainly dented their confidence. Hobart would desperately want their batters to come out good in this game. Perth looks to be the more balanced team of the two and have made a flying start to their campaign. Moreover, this is their home ground, and that gives them an edge. Perth’s batting is strong, and the balance in their bowling attack means they should be able to dominate this contest.
