Australia secured their third-highest ODI total ever, and the second-highest against South Africa, to clinch victory in the second ODI and claim a 2-0 series lead in the five-match series. This is their fifth straight victory on the tour, and it will require a special effort from the Proteas to stop them in this form. The home side has looked a little scratchy, particularly in the batting department, and has their work cut out as they prepare to take on the Aussies in the third ODI at Potchefstroom on Tuesday. On this form, though, Australia will start as favorites.
After allowing Australia to post a massive 392 on the board, South Africa needed to bat out of their skins to get even close to the total. Initially, their chase appeared promising, as Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma accumulated 81 runs. However, the runs soon became scarce, and wickets began to tumble at a quick pace. With Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller at the crease, the opposition had reason to worry as they combined for an impressive 58-run partnership for the fifth wicket. However, the tide turned when Klaasen fell short of a half-century, and the team's score stood at 177-5 during the 27th over.
South Africa were eventually bundled out for 269, suffering a heavy 123-run defeat.
Bavuma has looked the most assured batter for the home side in this series. Another solid performance from him in the next ODI won’t be surprising. However, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram’s lack of runs is a serious concern. If Markram can rediscover his recent form, it would help the home side a great deal.
Also, keep an eye out on Klaasen, as he is starting to look like his dangerous self.
South Africa faces graver issues as their preferred fast bowlers appeared ineffective and listless against Australia’s batters. Anrich Nortje suffered from lower-back spasms after bowling just five overs, although he did return to bat. On the positive side, the spinners, Aiden Markram and Tabraiz Shamsi, performed well by maintaining an economy rate of under seven runs per over while completing their allotted overs.

When you post 392 on the board after batting first, you are already halfway there towards victory. Scores like these are very rarely chased, and that didn’t happen in the second ODI.
David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne combined to score 151 runs for the second wicket and notched up their 20th and second ODI centuries, respectively. Warner also matched Sachin Tendulkar's record of five ODI centuries against South Africa, and he now holds the record for the most centuries as an opener across all three international formats (46).
Labuschagne, who was omitted from South Africa's World Cup squad, has now delivered consecutive match-winning performances. It will be interesting to see if the selectors are forced to rethink their decision, but for now, Labuschagne looks all set to milk the South African bowling.
Travis Head, too, is continuing his terrific form on the tour and scored an aggressive 64 off 36 balls. The opener averages 60.86 from his last 8 games and is definitely worth backing.
On the bowling side, Adam Zampa (4-48) and Sean Abbott (2-50) were the standout performers on this batting pitch. Zampa has been consistently good with his lines and creates pressure on batters by not allowing them to score easy runs. Josh Hazlewood, who was rested for this game, is likely to be brought back for the third ODI, as Australia looks to seal the series.

Senwes Park traditionally offers batter-friendly conditions. The pitch tends to be quite flat, providing even bounce, which can be favorable for stroke play. It generally doesn't offer excessive seam movement, making it essential for bowlers to focus on line, length, and variations to be effective. The surface also tends to stay true throughout the day, but spinners might get more surface from the wicket in the second half.
The weather in Potchefstroom will be mostly sunny and cooler but pleasant.
Historically, Senwes Park has witnessed high-scoring ODI encounters. The average score batting first here is 249, but the highest total posted at the venue is South Africa’s 418-5 against Zimbabwe in 2006. The average runs per over here is 5.26. The team batting first should look to set a target of about 320 runs.
There have been 20 ODIs played at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom – 11 have been won by the side chasing and 7 by the team batting first. This venue clearly favors the chasing side, and the team winning the toss is likely to field first.
Australia have looked the far superior side on this tour. It was expected that the Proteas would put up a much better show in the ODIs, but that hasn’t really happened. They still have the resources, but they just aren’t clicking as a unit. Australia, meanwhile, are firing despite being without Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc. They have incredible depth and are building on their winning momentum. We reckon they will dominate the third ODI too.
We are backing Australia as the winners of the third ODI.
