South Africa was mauled by Indian pacers at the Bull Ring in Johannesburg. Bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan found lateral movement in helpful conditions and finished their demolition job inside 15 overs but all-rounder Andile Phelukwayo’s late-order rearguard effort meant the home team could at least avoid the indignity of being skittled out for less than 100. South African bowlers couldn’t produce what their counterparts could, and Indian batters scampered through to victory well within twenty overs.
To win the toss only to be folded within 30 overs doesn’t reflect well on South Africa and the hosts will be eager to stage a comeback. They can heave a sigh of relief that the action shifts to Gqeberha where they defeated India in the second T20I.
The pink ODI this season was one to forget for the home side. Nothing went right for them except the toss. Indian pacers, in favourable conditions, had the South African batsmen dance to their tunes, right from the word go.
The South African batting unit couldn’t fully recover from the humiliation of the 3rd T20I, folding to less than 120 without any fight. Except opener Zorzi and all-rounder Phelukwayo, everyone in the team struggled to put bat onto ball. Back to back batting collapses are hard to recover from especially when there’s a short turnaround. But South Africa have to find a way to put their shambolic batting displays behind pretty quickly and turn up a totally different side.
It is not possible to make any technical adjustments in such a short span, so it is key for them to stick to their techniques and to have self-belief that they can see out the threat when the ball does a bit and play their shots and score runs when it gets easier. SA bowlers have not had enough to fight with in the last two matches, and they’ll be hoping their batsmen will come good and put enough runs on the board for them to work with.

India could not have asked for a better start to the ODI series. In the opening ODI, South African batsmen had no answers to the questions posed by Indian bowlers, especially Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. The two pacers combined to take nine wickets, restricting the hosts to their lowest ODI score ever at home.
Agreed, South Africa’s clueless batting made things a lot easier for them but the discipline their bowlers showed in helpful conditions is remarkable. After knocking over the South African top order cheaply, Arshdeep and Avesh didn’t get complacent and kept bowling incisive spells to make sure the home team doesn’t claw their way back in. They hunted as a pack and collected 9 wickets between them, wrapping up the South African innings well inside of 30 overs. They did the heavy lifting themselves and the innings was pretty much done and dusted before Axar Patel could come on to have a bowl.
In reply, India lost Ruturaj early but debutant opener Sai Sudarshan partnered up with Shreyas Iyer compiling a match winning partnership to finish the game off with 33 overs to spare. Rajat Patidar may come in to the XI in place of Shreyas Iyer, who has left the ODI squad to begin prep work for the test series.

The conditions here offer enough assistance to pace and spin, which could very well play into Indian bowlers’ hands. The pitch here is usually slow and low, and on the drier side so run scoring could be difficult during the middle overs unless batsmen accumulate 1s and 2s to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
St George’s Park, the venue of the second T20I, is hosting the second game of the ODI series. The highest aggregate here is 656 runs in 99.1 overs when SA met Australia in a ODI in 2002, and the lowest tally stands at 240 runs in 68.1 overs in a game between SA and England in 2009.
Historically, this ground has remained immune to the toss deciding the outcome of the match. In the 42 games held here so far, teams batting first have won 20 times and chasing teams have come out winning 21 times. Granted the never-ending woes of the SA batting order, India may send the hosts in to bat first and challenge them to put on a big score especially when the conditions are conducive to bowling.
Batting is the strong suit of the hosts but two failures with the bat must have put a big dent in their confidence. They are a bit exposed when their batting struggles to fire, and with many batters in the side currently looking far from settled, the odds are they will crumble under pressure should the pitch and conditions favour Indian bowlers. India has got a fairly good pace and spin attack, and it’d be a uphill task for SA batters to put up a fight when the conditions assist swing and seam or spin bowling.
