South Australia started their new Shield season with a 7-wicket loss but followed it up with a whopping 186-run win against New South Wales at Adelaide. In a low-scoring encounter, South Australia set New South Wales a target of 323 to win and ended up bundling them out for just 136. Fast bowlers Nathan McAndrew and Harry Conway took 9 wickets between them to execute the dismantling job.
McAndrew now leads the bowling charts for South Australia with 10 wickets, while Conway has 6. Another bowler who has impressed is Jordan Buckingham, who took a seven-for in the game against Tasmania. He didn’t play the next match, but hopefully he will be back for this one.
So far, Nathan McSweeney has stood out in the batting department. The middle-order batter has scored 214 runs in 4 innings at an average of 53.50. In the match against New South Wales, McSweeney’s 64 and 100 made all the difference.
Another batter worth watching out for is captain Jake Lehmann. It’s been only two matches, but he has looked solid for the most part and has scored 164 runs at an average of 41. We think this will be a big season for him.

Defending champions, Western Australia are looking really good. They started their season with a dominating innings and 53-run win against Victoria. And while their next match against Tasmania ended in a draw, they shined with the bat, posting a mammoth total of 574-8 on the board.
Cameron Bancroft has been really impressive, scoring 213 runs in 4 innings at an average of 106. He is undoubtedly their most important batter. The experienced opener was the tournament’s leading run-getter last season, with a whopping 945 runs to his name at an average of 59. He is looking good for another memorable season.
Skipper Sam Whiteman’s majestic 188 in the match against Tasmania showed that he too is determined to leave his mark.
Western Australia will also look at Hilton Cartwright to make an impact. He played a crucial role in the team’s success last season, collecting 629 runs at an average of 39.
In the bowling department, off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli leads the way. He has grabbed 12 wickets so far at an average of 19.25. Fast bowler Aaron Hardie, with 6 wickets in 4 innings, has looked in good rhythm too.

The Adelaide Oval surface tends to favor the batters more and is usually pretty flat on the first two to three days. As the match progresses, the pitch wears down and brings the spinners into the picture. As with most Australian wickets, this pitch provides generous bounce for the bowlers, but it isn’t enough to trouble batters much once the shine has worn off from the new ball.
The weather in Adelaide will be mostly sunny and warm through the four days of the match.
In the last six matches of the Sheffield Shield played at the Adelaide Oval, the average first innings score has been 341. The highest total posted here in these six matches has been 482-8 by South Australia against New South Wales in 2021. The team batting first must look to set a total of around 350-380 runs at least.
The Adelaide Oval has been great for batting sides in recent years. Batting first here these days is the better option, as teams will have the chance to put up a huge total and then apply pressure on the opposition as the wicket slows down.
Western Australia have won two of their last three matches against South Australia. The two-time defending champions have started the season on the right note and are looking settled. South Australia have a good bowling attack, but their batting unit doesn’t look strong. In comparison, Western Australia have a formidable batting unit that can bat the opposition out of the game. The overall balance that Western Australia have gives them the edge in this encounter.
Back Western Australia as the winners of this match.
