After an exciting debut season, the SA20 returns with a high bar to exceed in 2024. Once again, Durban's Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Mumbai Indians Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape will fight it out for the title. Unlike some other franchise leagues where some teams play each other twice and others only once, there is consistency in the SA20 with all teams playing each other home and away in the round robin group stage before three play-off fixtures and a final.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape finished level on points with fifth placed Durban's Super Giants and eight points behind Joburg Super Kings in the group stage last year before coming through the play-offs to win the title.
It promises to be another exciting tournament with cricket lovers following the action from across the globe.
Ahead of this game, skipper Aiden Markram will still be basking in the glow of his remarkable Test century for South Africa against India in their rapid Second Test at Newlands last week. His innings was littered with booming drives through the covers and we can expect more of the same from the powerful right-hander in this match. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma is not expected to be fit after he missed the Second Test with India due to another hamstring injury.
With the ball, Marco Jansen is expected to be the biggest threat for Sunrisers. His height, ability to swing the ball, pace and left-arm angle always makes him tough to face at any stage in an innings. He will be looking to build on his 8 wickets from last season and we can expect Simon Harmer to be very consistent with his off-spin throughout this game.

Joburg Super Kings have again assembled an exciting group of players who will be led by the former South African skipper and now T20 globetrotter Faf du Plessis. We expect the muscly opener to be part of a formidable top three which also includes South Africa opener Reeza Hendricks and England's World Cup Winner Moeen Ali. And in David Wiese, Romario Shepherd and Gerald Coetzee, the Super Kings have plenty of big-hitting all-rounders to fall back on should the top order fail!
Heading up the bowling attack is South Africa's latest pace bowling sensation in Nandre Burger. He was accused by some of smiling too much in his Test debut but after making his international bow across all three formats since the start of December, and being a success in them all, can anyone really blame him? Romario Shepherd is a master of white ball bowling and his death overs will be particularly worth watching.

The forecast is for high humidity, which should be good news for the swing bowlers, and a high of 21 degrees at St George's Park on Wednesday. There will be a constant threat of rain but it is not guaranteed that any will fall at the venue and we could get a full uninterrupted match.
Although the overhead conditions will be favourable for the pace bowlers, the pitch itself is one which will allow for batters to hit through the line. The surface will provide pace and bounce with a par score likely to be over 200 in this opening match of the tournament.
With nearly all the matches in last year's SA20 seeing the toss winning skipper choose to field first, we are expecting a similar approach in this year's competition. Particularly at this stage of the tournament, where there will be some uncertainties over the pitches, captains will want to let the opposition work out what a par score is whilst batting.
There is plenty of excitement around this competition getting underway again and we are expecting to see a high-scoring but close contest at St George's Park on Wednesday. Both teams have experience in their top order and some exciting bowlers in their ranks. Last year is now just that, last year, but we are backing the 2023 Champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win.
