Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by 8 wickets
Sri Lanka were set to win the first encounter before rain washed out the game. Chasing 211 in the second ODI, they found a way to scamper home after being reduced to 5/90. The home team have struck the right balance with bat and ball to deal with any challenge the visitors may throw at them. They’re looking good for a series win here in Colombo.
We are backing Sri Lanka as the winners of this contest.

After a shambolic world cup campaign, Sri Lanka will be pushing for their first home series win under the captaincy of enterprising batsman Kusal Mendis. While Zimbabwe are figuring their way out of the heartache of missing out on both the ODI and T20 world cups, they hope a series-levelling win in the third ODI could offer some respite. The first match of the series was washed out. Zimbabwe was in a spot of bother when rain stopped play, having lost two wickets with just 12 runs on the board.
The second ODI ebbed and flowed, though. A superb 95 from Janith Liyanage coupled with crucial late order resistance from a couple of bowlers helped Sri Lanka get over the line with just one over to spare. A total just above 200 was never going to be hard to achieve, but Sri Lanka made life difficult for themselves losing 6 wickets with over 100 runs to get.
Zimbabwe fought valiantly and stretched the home side, but couldn’t quite close out the game.

The new look Sri Lankan side is still finding its feet and far from convincing. However, they’re scrappy and are ready to take the fight to the opposition even when the chips are down. A couple of fringe players have come into the team looking to cement their place in the ODI outfit.
Janith Liyanage, with 119 runs in 2 hits, was the standout player in the second ODI for Sri Lanka. He scored 95 and helped his team get over the line by making useful partnerships with lower middle order and tail-enders. His vital knock proved to be the difference between a victory and a defeat, after the visitors removed the top 5 Sri Lankan batsmen with the scoreboard reading 90 from 26.3 overs.
Ousted captain Dasun Shanaka failed to make a meaningful contribution with the bat again, but Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana continued their good work from the first match scoring some useful late order runs that took the home team closer to victory before Jeffrey Vandersay finished off the job.
SL batters were scratchy with but the bowlers did a terrific job with both bat and ball to give the home team an edge in the series. SL look set to take the series in the decider, after a solid team performance.

A shocking exit from the ODI world cup qualifiers at home and an abysmal failure to secure a berth in the T20 world cup underlined a disappointing 2023 for Zimbabwean cricket.
They have not started off the New Year well too. Torrential rain came to their rescue in the first match when they were teetering at 2/12 from 4 overs, helping them avert a loss.
The visitors had a poor start to the second ODI, despite opting to bat first. However, they recovered from the early loss of wickets and limped their way to a decent score courtesy a useful 82 from captain Craig Ervine and handy contributions from Milton Shumba and leggie Ryan Burl. They lost their captain with more than 13 overs to go but couldn’t muster any more than 26 after his departure.
They were skittled out before the full quota of overs could be completed and squandered a nice opportunity to finish with a par score, which could have been competitive. Their bowlers made a fight out of it dismissing half the Sri Lankan side with still 100 runs to get, but couldn’t quite close out the game.
A missed opportunity can prove to be costly in a short 3-match ODI series, but Zimbabwe will be up for the fight again in the decider.

The pitch will be low and slow, which means batsmen will find run scoring quite difficult unless they knuckle down and acclimatize to the pace of the wicket quick enough. As for weather forecast, the conditions are supposed to be cloudy and a bit humid. A couple of showers are expected late evening so a stoppage of play cannot be ruled out.

The match is going to be played at R. Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo. Since 2010, Sri Lanka have won 29 out of the 48 matches played at this venue. They lost 16, and 3 matches ended up being no result.
Despite having huffed and puffed their way to a win, Sri Lanka might opt for chasing should they win the toss. Zimbabwe haven’t shown any intent with the bat and look a bit clueless against quality spin, so the home team will be hoping to restrict them to a total below par and chase down the runs.
As the series draws to a close, the pitch has worn down considerably. The bowlers are in with a sniff and could decide the outcome of the game and the series on their own. By virtue of having a stronger bowling attack that thrives in these conditions, Sri Lanka, we reckon, will defeat Zimbabwe and go on to win the series.
We are backing Sri Lanka as the winners of this contest.
