This 2024 Women's Asia Cup tournament is a quickfire competition and any team who loses their first two group stage games can not expect to stay in the tournament. Therefore, Sri Lanka Women have a massive advantage after their opening match victory whereas Malaysia Women are already staring down the barrel of a quick return home before they have even unpacked their suitcases.

Sri Lanka has a proud history of cricket whereas Malaysia is still a relatively junior member of the cricketing world and it would be a major shock if Malaysia Women were able to pull off a victory.

However, this is tournament cricket and anything can happen!

Sri Lanka Women Preview

After reaching the final in 2022, Sri Lanka Women are the favourites to win Group B and they looked every inch the best side in the pool with a convincing win over their nearest challengers, Bangladesh Women in Match 4 on Saturday.

There are not many players in this tournament who would get into India Women's side but in skipper Chamari Athapaththu have a genuinely world class performer. That said, it was her fellow opener Vishmi Gunaratne who starred with the bat against Bangladesh Women and there is now a real feel that Sri Lanka Women have sufficient depth to challenge for the title once more.

Their bowling attack will be looking to make quick work of this inexperienced Malaysia Women XI.

Sri Lanka Women Predicted Playing XI:

Vishmi Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu (c), Harshitha Smarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Hasini Perera, Nilakshika Silva, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Augandika Kumari, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Inoshi Priyadharshani

Malaysia Women Preview

Malaysia Women were the underdogs against Thailand Women, who reached the semi-finals of this tournament in 2022, and at one stage did look like they might even chase down their target of 134.

In the end, a lack of batting depth cost Malaysia Women but they will still take confidence from their opening pair putting on 68 runs from 11 overs on Saturday afternoon.

With the ball, the team management will be looking to 24 year old off-spinner Mahira Izzati Ismail to put in another strong performance after she took 3/16 on this pitch in the opening game.

Malaysia Women Predicted Playing XI:

Winifred Duraisingam (c), Wan Julia (wk), Elsa Hunter, Mahirah Izzati Ismail, Ainna Hamizah Hashim, Jamahidaya Intan, Aina Najwa, Suabika Manivannan, Aisya Eleesa, Dhanusri Muhunan, Amalin Sorfina

Although the bowlers have generally enjoyed playing in the Women's Asia Cup so far in Dambulla, we have seen batters able to play their shots and be rewarded. Overall, a par score is likely to be around 140.

Toss: To Bowl

The conditions are unlikely to change much across this game so we predict that both captains will want to chase. Therefore, we expect both skippers to choose to field first in this match.

Few pundits would go as far as to predict Sri Lanka Women winning the whole tournament but certainly most are expecting them to top Group B with a 100% record. They have much more experience and talent than Malaysia Women so we are backing Sri Lanka Women to get another victory.
