The Big Cricket League has been an idea which has captured the imagination of emerging and retired players for many months and this looks like being a fascinating tournament.
The quirk for this T20 competition is that each team has a mix of former internationals (marquee players) and local, emerging talent who have worked hard to get through trials to reach this stage.
The question is - will it be the marquee players who are able to dominate lesser players or will the so called lesser players who will be inspired by going against stars of yesteryear?
Either way, we can expect attacking cricket throughout the next ten days.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the top three for Southern Spartans are likely to play a big part in the success or otherwise of the side in this opening match as well as across the tournament as a whole.
Skipper Suresh Raina was typically used in the middle order later in his career but he certainly still has the ability to tee-off from the first ball and we expect him to open the batting alongside former South African rapid-run-getter Herschelle Gibbs! And if either of those fall early, Phil Mustard will be ready, pads strapped on, to go big from the off.
With the ball, it may come down to who has the best variations on a pitch which is likely to assist the batters! Milin Yadav and Paul Valthaty are bowlers who possess the skills to succeed.

Considering that Shikhar Dhawan is one of the all-time Indian Premier League highest run scorers and was still playing in the tournament last season, we can expect his eyes, technique and fitness to still be sharp! He will be leading the Northern Challengers and he has the potential to be the standout player across the entire competition.
Alongside Dhawan, Dane Vilas is another with a brilliant short format record and he is likely to be used in the 'finisher' role in this game.
With the ball, we expect the Challengers to turn to Bipul Sharma and Mahaveer Singh Rathore with the new ball. Backing up that pair are likely to be Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Kundan Kumar.

According to the weather forecast, there will be no need for umbrellas at the Laibhai Contractor Stadium, Surat! The temperature will be in the mid-high twenties from start to finish with the odd bit of cloud cover and high humidity.
This venue has been chosen due to the skills of the curator and a strong surface is expected across the tournament. In this opener, there may be some assistance for the bowlers early on but overall it will be a strong place for batting!
With the tournament bringing together different levels of players as well as encouraging explosive batting, we expect this opener to be one where the captains want to bowl first before chasing in the second half of the game.
Ahead of the tournament, and with so many unknowns in of how the emerging players will perform, we are basing our predictions on the quality of Shikhar Dhawan as well as the fact that he is very recently retired.
We are backing Northern Challengers to win!
