Afghanistan beat United Arab Emirates by 72 runs
A shocking loss to Nepal in the semi-finals of the T20 Asia Qualifiers doused their hopes of featuring in the world cup next year, but UAE's next challenge is here. They are going to go up against a different Afghan outfit this time. A few key players are missing in action, however Afghans won’t worry much with some exciting talent ready to step up from the reserves.

Afghanistan tour UAE for yet another 3-match T20I series this year, after beating the hosts 2-1 in February. Several marquee Afghan players from that squad might not feature in this series due to injury and franchise cricket commitments.
Therefore, the players from UAE will be eyeing this as a genuine chance to put the second-string Afghan squad under the pump and snatch a rare series victory.
The 9-wicket win in Abu Dhabi is the one and only instance in which they’ve defeated Afghanistan in this format, so they’ll be hoping to go a little further this time.
A win in the first game gives winning team a leg up in a brief 3-match series, so team UAE will make sure they deny Afghani men that advantage.

After failing to book a berth for next year’s T20 world cup, Team UAE is working on course correction. Here they are taking on Afghanistan in a T20 series for the second time in the year. The Abu Dhabi leg of the series went to the visitors; UAE let Afghanistan take the first match but recovered quickly to level things up with a resounding 9-wicket win, but they couldn’t quite close out the third match and conceded another series to Afghanistan at home. But, this time around, they will have their sights set on winning the series having come awfully close last time.
Senior players like Muhammad Waseem, Junaid Siddique and Zahoor Khan had an excellent outing in that series and will be eager to perform well. Wicket keeper batsman Vriitya Aravind was consistent with the bat scoring close to 120 runs, although he’d have liked to have gotten them at a faster rate. Basil Hameed, after his exploits in the T20 qualifiers, would love to carry that into this series and help his team secure their first series win against the Afghans.
The hosts have yet to play a T20I game in Sharjah and so they’ll bank on their experienced outfit to step up and help them get an elusive series victory against a higher-ranked Afghanistan team.

Afghanistan are definitely no guests in this part of the world. Having played 10 more T20I matches here than the hosts (49 to UAE’s 39), UAE is basically a home away from home for the men in Blue. They will be looking to make their 50th match here a memorable affair with a win against the host country. Having clinched the series in 2016 and in February this year, they’ll be keen on winning another one to complete a hat-trick of series victories.
What makes this series special though is that a lot of fringe players with exciting talent are expected to take the field, with several big names missing. Their preparation went to plan after they notched up two big wins against the UAE falcons at the same ground in a different format. With two wins in as many ODIs, they couldn’t have asked for a better prep to this tour and they’ll come into this contest ready to adjust to the T20s, a format in which they back themselves to beat any team on their day.
The management and staff of the Afghanistan team will look at this series as an opportunity to put the young talent through their paces, and see who is ready to grab a few open spots for the T20 world cup.

Weather is predicted to be mostly sunny for this game. The pitch here at times does tend to slow down a little too fast, bringing spinners into the equation. Spin bowlers and medium pacers- who’re handy with slower balls, cutters, back of the hand balls - get good purchase here.

High TurnSharjah Cricket Stadium is hosting this match where the boundaries are short, and the pitch is relatively flat compared to other venues in the UAE. Surprisingly, the two hundred mark has been breached only once here when Afghanistan piled up 215/6 against Zimbabwe in 2016 (still the highest score on this ground). 38 by Hong Kong against Pakistan in the T20I world cup is the lowest.
Toss doesn’t seem to play a huge role here. Of the 31 matches that have had results here, teams batting first have been successful 17 times and teams chasing haven’t done far worse here winning 14 matches.
UAE are a much improved side and may run Afghanistan close, but they don't have a knack for winning games against stronger oppositions. For Afghanistan, some key personnel are missing in action and that's a sign of worry but they still have the firepower, talent, experience in their shed to see off any challenge that team UAE may hurl at them with both bat and ball.
