The Australia Domestic One-Day Cup 2023 is underway and both Victoria and New South Wales are off to a winning start. Both teams delivered a good bowling performance in their last match.

While Victoria bowled out Tasmania for 224 runs, NSW took on the same opposition and cleaned them up for just 198 runs. However, it was New South Wales who were clinical in their victory as they chased down the target with 6 wickets in hand with plenty of overs left.

Victoria Preview

Victoria skipper Peter Handscomb will not be happy with how his side reached the target in their last match against Tasmania. They’ve got a solid top-4 and as such, they shouldn’t have required so many overs and lost 7 wickets on their way to victory.

Peter Handscomb at number 4 is a reliable batsman and will be one to watch out for in this contest. At number 3, they’ve got Marcus Harris, another promising batsman who will be crucial in striking big partnerships in the middle.

And on top of all this, the opening pair of Thomas Rogers and Sam Harper promise a good, confident, and attacking start at the outset. After losing Harper early in the run-chase, Handscomb and Rogers added 62 runs for the 2nd wicket.

However, Victoria did not have any longer partnerships thereafter and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Campbell Kellaway, a 20-year old batting all-rounder stepped up and played a fighting knock of 46 runs at number 5 while his team was losing wickets regularly.

He held the innings from one end and ensured the team didn’t slip into further collapse. The lower order features a quality bowling all-rounder in Will Sutherland who will be a key finisher to watch out for.

In the bowling department, Scott Boland will lead the attack while Todd Murphy will be the key spinner in this attack. Though young and inexperienced, there are some quality bowlers in this squad who had a great first game.

New South Wales feature a strong overall side with a quality bowling attack that is well-ed by a strong batting lineup. The opening duo of Jack Edwards and Daniel Hughes is quite threatening and these two delivered a 137-run opening stand in the last match.

The batting order just gets better as you go further down the order. There is Kurtis Patterson at number 3 followed by skipper Moises Henriques. While the openers can adopt a more attacking approach, these two will be expected to build a strong partnership and stay at the crease longer. 

One of the most promising batters to come from the Aussie domestic circuit in recent times, Jason Sangha didn’t feature anywhere in the top 6 of this lineup.
