The 2023-24 Sheffield Shield season has kicked off and both Tasmania and Western Australia have won their respective opening matches.
The two teams will now go head to head at the W.A.C.A in Perth where the hosts have a terrific record winning 5 matches last season and losing just one. They have kicked off the new season with a huge win over Victoria.
Tasmania have got their key players firing at all ends. Whether it was the middle-order of the bowling attack, everyone delivered what was expected of them as Tasmania ed a 7-wicket win over South Australia.
This will be their second away game of the season and also one of the most challenging matches of the season. To come out on top at the W.A.C.A against the home team is a big deal.
All eyes will be on Gabe Bell and Lawrence Neil-Smith to do the job for the visitors while Corey Rocchiccioli and Cameron Gannon will be the key bowlers in the home team.

After two consecutive title wins in the Sheffield Shield, Western Australia continue to look threatening this year. They started off by winning by an innings and 53 runs in their first match at the W.A.C.A against Victoria, the runners-up of the last two seasons.
While Corey Rocchiccioli has continued his form, Cameron Gannon has also proven to be effective with the ball. Rocchiccioli picked 6 wickets in the last match including figures of 3 for 14 from 26 Overs in the 2nd innings.
Batting all-rounder Aaron Hardie helped get through the Victorian top order and give the hosts an upper hand. There are many bowling options in this side and all of them have looked very promising.
The biggest positive from the last match was the performance of the 19-year-old Teague Wyllie who scored 94 runs at number 3 and together with Cameron Bancroft added 193 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Jayden Goodwin and Aaron Hardie also looked in good touch in the middle order. While there is no Mitchell Marsh this year, Josh Phillippe and Ashton Turner will play a crucial role in the lower middle order.
It is a deep batting lineup with some in-form and experienced batters at key positions in the batting order. The hosts will pose a tough challenge to the visiting team in every department.

Jordan Silk will be hoping to carry the winning momentum to W.A.C.A and make the most of their current bowling form. Last year, batting first at this venue, Tasmania were bowled out for 179 runs.
After that kind of a start, it is nearly impossible to bounce back in the game against such a strong side. Victoria also suffered after being put to bat first. Silk should be considering bowling first at this venue and getting his in-form bowlers to restrict the home team to below 300 runs.
A 100-150+ runs lead in the 1st innings will put Tasmania right in the driver’s seat to win this match. Now that will not be an easy task against this opposition. They need Caleb Jewell and Jake Weatherald to deliver a good start.
Jewell looked in great touch in the last match with an 87-run knock. Charlie Wakim scored a century at number 3 and along with the opener Jewell built a 189-run partnership for the 2nd wicket.
The experienced Matthew Wade will be crucial at number 5 followed by another promising batsman Beau Webster. There are some big names in this side and on their best day, they could lead Tasmania to a 400+ total.
Webster, with his off-break bowling, will also be a key bowler in this side. He was quite impressive against Western Australia at this venue last year. Neil-Smith and Bell will be leading the attack instead of Jackson Bird and Riley Meredith this time around.

The pitch has bounce and pace for the bowlers and that will also allow the batters to play their strokes freely. Though the bowlers would find some help with the new ball in the 1st innings, the batters are likely to dominate second innings onward. It will be a sunny day with a high of 33 degrees Celsius in Perth.
W.A.C.A Ground in Perth, home to Western Australia, will be the venue for this clash. It is a significant venue in Australian cricket and has witnessed many historic games. The team batting first needs to put at least 300-330 runs on the board to stay competitive in the game. Anything less than that would allow the opposition to take a huge lead with a big total in the second innings.
Last year, team bowling first won all the matches played at this venue. And this year too, Western Australia won their opening game of the season bowling first on this ground. Tasmania should not be making the same mistake they did last season and instead opt to bowl first.
Tasmania look in much better shape than the last time around. Their key match-winners are in good form and will deliver an impactful performance at the W.A.C.A. However, given the home conditions, recent form, and their record at this venue, Western Australia will have a slight edge in the contest and start as favorites in our match prediction.
