The Providence Stadium, also known as the Guyana National Stadium is located at Providence, East Bank Demerara, Guyana. A few kilometers south of Georgetown, this stadium has hosted an array of breathtaking cricket showdowns. The Providence Stadium was established in March 2007 and was specifically built to host the Super 8 matches during the 2007 Cricket World Cup. It now serves as the new national stadium for Guyana, replacing the historic Bourda Cricket Ground. The stadium boasts a seating capacity of around 15,000 spectators with three major stands and a grass mound that can accommodate around 4000 people.

Providence Stadium holds a significant place in the history of West Indian Cricket and it witnessed history on the very first day it opened its gates. Lasith Maling, the Sri Lankan speedster, etched his name in cricket’s history by becoming the first bowler ever to take four wickets in four consecutive deliveries, a feat accomplished against South Africa on the grounds of Providence.

While the stadium has hosted only a couple of Test matches to date, it truly came into its own during the 2010 ICC World T20. During that time it hosted six group-stage matches, including two electrifying contests featuring the West Indies. The venue witnessed a historic tri-series in 2016. Providence continues to play host to West Indies matches, as well as the exciting clashes of the Caribbean Premier League (L). The Providence Stadium is set to host 6 matches during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Providence Stadium Pitch Report

Providence Stadium in Guyana offers a fairly balanced pitch for both batsmen and bowlers. While known to assist fast bowlers early on due to atmospheric conditions, spinners gradually find more hold as the match progresses. The well-maintained pitch generally offers a decent bounce suitable for various playing styles.

The pitch at Providence tends to be on the slower side, meaning batsmen might need to adjust their timing and power accordingly.  However, once settled, the even bounce and true surface can reward stroke play. Spinners, especially those who impart flight and variations, can pose a threat as the innings progresses and the pitch begins to offer some turn.

The outfield at Providence can be variable, sometimes offering good speed, and occasionally slowing down. The boundaries aren't excessively large, providing scoring opportunities for power hitters and crafty runners.

The weather conditions of Guyana play a crucial role in the pitch behavior. On sunny days, the surface may get hard, making for a better batting track. Overcast conditions can aid swing bowlers early in the match and bring spinners into play slightly sooner in the innings. Considering the pitch's tendency to slow down, teams may consider chasing after winning the toss, as bowling can become more challenging later on.
