Is The Cricket World Ready For Another Flintoff

Is The Cricket World Ready For Another Flintoff

Earlier today, 19 year old fast bowling all-rounder Corey Flintoff signed a two year rookie contract with Kent County Cricket Club. He played for Lancashire County Cricket Club's second XI in 2024 but will now combine his sporting career with university studies in the south east of England for the next 24 months.

Fans of County Cricket in the UK will be excited about this new g and expect an increase in attention of the County Championship should Corey be selected at any stage!

The surname 'Flintoff' will mean plenty to cricket fans across the globe after Corey's father Andrew, or 'Freddie' as he was better known, played over 200 times for England from 1998 to 2009. He was instrumental in England's 2005 Ashes victory and went on to captain the Test side.

Then there is Corey's younger brother Rocky who made his debut at the tender age of 16 for Lancashire last summer and went on to impress for England Lions in Australia earlier this year.

Let's take a look at the career of Andrew Flintoff and look forward to what might be in store for Corey and Rocky!

Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff

Big, tall and strong, Freddie Flintoff had the build and character to take him to the top of world cricket and although it took him a while to get there, it was certainly worth the wait for England fans. Sadly injuries meant that he was not able to maintain his best levels for more than three or four years, but in those years he made up for it with some spell-binding hitting and spells of fast bowling!

Indian Premier League

When Chennai Super Kings spent $1.55 million on securing Flintoff's services for the 2009 IPL, he was the t-most expensive player in the tournament. Unfortunately, injuries meant he would only appear three times for CSK and he would not return to the competition in future years.

Many CSK fans have wondered what a Flintoff-MS Dhoni combination would have looked like over the course of a seasn, but although the latter is still going strong in his 'finisher' role, the rest have been left to dreams.

No doubt, Flintoff would have been a brilliant IPL player, rivalling some of the great all-rounders seen in the tournament, if he had been able to get through a whole season injury-free.

Other famous sons

The Flintoffs certainly don't have a monopoly on talented sons following in their father's footsteps in cricket at the moment. Archie Vaughan had an impressive breakthrough season for Somerset last year and many are tipping him for the top like his dad, England captain Michael Vaughan.

Keeping the Ashes in mind, former Australia player and coach Darren Lehmann saw his son Jake hit a century for South Australia on their way to a Sheffield Shield final victory against Queensland last week!
