The Abu Dhabi Knight Riders take on the Gulf Giants in an important mid-table clash.
The Knight Riders, having played one game more than the rest of the teams in the competition except MI Emirates, are level with the Giants on the points table with 2 wins from 5 matches. The Knight Riders won both their matches against Desert Vipers, but lost both the encounters to MI Emirates. Their other clash against the Dubai Capitals didn’t end particularly well for them. Despite having put up a massive 183 on board, they let the Capitals batsmen wrap up things well inside the 17th over of the chase.
The Giants won their opening game against the Warriors comfortably, but lost the following two against the MI Emirates and Desert Vipers. But they turned a corner with a win against Dubai Capitals, making sure their slump in form didn’t lead to something worse. Both teams now go into this match hoping for a win to boost their chances of qualifying through to the business stages of the tournament.

Opener Alishan Sharafu regained his touch, making a brilliant, match-winning 82* against the Vipers. He followed it up with a solid 37 a day later against the MI Emirates. Sam Hain and Michael Pepper also helped themselves to some runs in the same match, but a quickfire 46* off 17 balls from Andre Russell down the order made sure the Knight Riders finished strong.
That’s the second time the big Jamaican crossed 40 runs in this season. Another big hitter Laurie Evans, who bludgeoned 67* against the Capitals, is yet to find his groove completely in the ILT20 after coming off a stellar BBL season with the Perth Scorchers. But there’s a bigger concern; the side’s bowling is not firing enough. Except for Sunil Narine, who has been excellent with the ball so far, and Ali Khan, the leading wicket taker with 5 scalps in 4 matches, no other bowler has performed.
And it showed in their failed attempt to keep MI Emirates from chasing 189. After a costly 14-run opening over Imad Wasim was removed from the attack and never brought back in. David Willey leaked runs in his first over and came back to make a breakthrough in his second spell, removing Kusal Perera in the 10th over, but it was too late by then.
Marchant de Lange, who replaced Irishman Josh Little, had a bad day at office giving away nearly 50 runs in his 4-over spell. And Andre Russell couldn’t have much impact with the ball, with his 3 overs costing 34 runs.
Alishan Sharafu, Joe Clarke, Sam Hain, Imad Wasim, Michael-Kyle Pepper (wk), Andre Russell, Laurie Evans, Sunil Narine (c), David Willey, Matiullah Khan, Marchant de Lange.

Gulf Giants got their tournament off to a winning start, defeating Sharjah Warriors by 31 runs. However, they couldn’t convert that comfortable victory into a winning streak, dropping their next match against a powerful MI Emirates side. A bounce-back win in the next encounter against Desert Vipers was ruled out when the Vipers batsmen mowed down the middling score they set off to chase with 8 balls to spare.
Openers Jamie Smith and James Vince have gone a little quiet after two strong starts in the tournament. Chris Lynn has been outstanding scoring 100 runs in his two appearances, and he has an able ally in Jordan Cox who has scored over three 30+ scores in four matches. Shimron Hetmyer’s horrific form continues in this season in which he has yet to cross 20 even once.
Jamie Overton, after his outstanding 3-for against Sharjah Warriors in the opener and a whirlwind 41 from 18 against the MI Emirates in a losing cause, hasn’t played a part in the last two matches.Carlos Brathwaite filled the gap somehow against Dubai Capitals with a match-winning 3/26, removing 3 strong batters in David Warner, Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza.
With only one wicket to show in four appearances, Mujeeb’s lack of penetration in the early and middle overs is a tell-tale sign of how poor the Giants have been this season with the ball.
Jamie Smith (wk), James Vince (c), Jordan Cox, Shimron Hetmyer, Usman Khan, Carlos Brathwaite, Dominic Drakes, Chris Jordan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Zuhaib Zubair, Richard Gleeson.

The forecast remains clear so we should have a complete game with no interruption. The wicket here so far hasn’t been batting-friendly completely, with only one match where the aggregate climbed above 375+ runs.

This match will be played at the Sheikh Zayed cricket stadium in Abu Dhabi. Of the 4 matches held here so far, 3 have been won by teams chasing.
The trend this season is electing to field after winning the coin toss. The chasing team has gone on to win nine out of thirteen matches this season, so don’t be surprised if the team winning the toss decides to put the opposition in to have a bat first.
Both the teams head into this contest with contrasting results, a loss for the Knight Riders and a win for the Giants. But they'll have the same expectation: to notch a win to make sure they stay in touch with the top 2 and boost their chances of qualifying. Even though there is nothing concrete to base our prediction on, our guess is that Abu Dhabi Knight Riders batsmen will overcome the challenge that the Giants bowlers bring to them.
