This season's Super Smash has thrown up plenty of interesting clashes, narratives and back-stories so far, and there is another one to come with this fixture between Auckland Aces and Otago Volts.
The two teams went head to head on New Year's Day and it was the Volts who came out on top that day at Molyneux Park with a narrow 3 wicket win achieved with only 2 balls remaining. But since then, the Aces have been simply unstoppable and they are now only two points from Wellington Firebirds at the top of the table.
The Volts have been inconsistent of late, but if they can prise out a win in Auckland then the middle of the table will once again get very congested!

Otago Volts beat Auckland Aces by 42 runs

We mentioned earlier that Auckland Aces have been unstoppable. Well, in fairness, that probably didn't do them justice considering they have won their last three games by margins of 53 runs, 8 wickets with 28 balls remaining and 8 wickets with 21 balls remaining!
Their last victory was over bottom of the table Northern Districts in Match 21 and there were two standout performers. Lockie Fergson set the tone with the ball and later took the Player of the Match Award after returning remarkable figures of 4/14. Then it was over to opener Sean Solia who took the game quickly away from Northern Districts with 67 not out from only 42 balls.
Skipper Robert O'Donnell is also in strong form and he top scored in the last match against Otago Volts. Also keep an eye out for left-arm spinner Louis Delport who took 3/16 in that head to head and has 10 wickets from the last four matches.

Otago Volts were well beaten by Central Districts in their last game after they came up against two in-form batters in Will Young and Dane Cleaver who hit over 150 runs between them. And then when faced with a target of 188 to win, the Volts could only muster together 135 runs, with Max Chu and Ollie White the only two to get into the thirties, before the team were bowled out.
Captain Dean Foxcroft will be looking to the same trio of players who secured the win over the Aces earlier this year. Firstly himself who top scored with 51 runs from 39 balls and the medium fast bowling pair of Jake Gibson and Travis Muller who both took three-wicket hauls.
Foxcroft will lay it out to his team before this game that nothing short of a win will be enough.

There is no danger of any rain interruptions in this match but we may also not see any sunshine! Cloudy conditions, with high humidity levels are forecast throughout this game on Sunday in Auckland.
This will certainly not be the quickest pitch in this year's Super Smash and there could be plenty of grip for the spinners and the slower-ball variations employed by the quicks. It may take a while for the batters to feel secure at the crease and a par score will be in the region of 150-160 at this ground.
With Auckland Aces winning their last two games by fielding first and the Volts winning the previous head to head by chasing down a target in the second innings of the match, it would be a big surprise if both captains did not choose to bowl first if they win the toss ahead of this clash.
Even though it was Otago Volts who came out on top on New Year's Day, we are not expecting them to complete the double over Auckland Aces. The Aces have been winning games by very healthy margins from the 4th January onwards and we are backing them to record another victory in this game.
