The Plunket Shield is always a long slog of a tournament but the end of this season's competition is starting to come into view ahead of this clash between Central Stags and Auckland Aces.
When the two teams last met, it was mid-October and the New Zealand summer was just getting underway, five months later and the Aces are still waiting to taste victory in the 2023/24 tournament.
For the Stags, they set the early pace with two wins from their opening three but their progress has stalled somewhat after three draws in a row against Canterbury, Northern Districts and Wellington.

Although it is now three draws on the bounce for Central Stags, they were one wicket away from getting the better of Wellington in their last game earlier this month in Palmerston North.
In many ways it was the near-perfect performance, 19 wickets taken and a first innings total of 572/9 declared which included centuries for opener Curtis Heaphy and Brad Schmulian at number four. But that final dismissal eluded them and they had to settle for a draw.
Skipper Greg Hay will be looking for more ruthlessness with the ball and a perhaps quicker runs with the bat as the Stags search for perfection in this game.

Although Auckland Aces rallied in the second half of the game against Northern Districts last time out to lose by only 63 runs, ultimately they weer unable to recover from being bowled out for 158 in their first innings. That said, at one point they were 61/8 and 29 from Danru Ferns at number nine and 65 from Harjot Johal at number ten were critical to getting them into the contest.
Skipper Robert O'Donnell will be demanding razor-sharp focus throughout this game with the bat as his side go in pursuit of their first Plunket Shield win of the season!
With the ball, Danru Ferns (6/62) and Louis Delport (4/131) look set to be the main wicket taking options.

No rain is forecast in Napier across all four days of this game. The temperature will be in the high teens and low twenties throughout with humidity unlikely to be an issue. We are not expecting much cloud cover on any day but there could be some on days one and two.
McLean Park often assists the pace bowlers who are brave enough to pitch the ball up and let it either swing through the air or move off the pitch. Getting in will be the main issue for the batters but once they have done so the surface will not cause many issues. A par score in the first innings will be around 350.
Although there is always something in the pitch in the first session in New Zealand, it will also be the best time to bat so we predict that both sides will want to bat first ahead of this match.
Although Central Stags have been stopped in their tracks with three back to back draws, they very nearly won their last match and have been playing a few levels above those of Auckland throughout this competition. We expect Central Stags to get on top on day one before not relinquishing the advantage and going on to win the contest.
We are backing Central Stags to win this match!
