The race to the top 3 in the Women’s Super Smash 2024-25 is in its last stage. Canterbury Magicians and Northern Brave are tied with 16 points each. The two teams are placed number 3 and 4 respectively.

However, this will be Canterbury’s last match of the league stage while Northern Brave will play another match after this. Canterbury need a big win here to hold on to their number 3 spot to ensure a place in the Eliminator.

The hosts need to address the batting issues as they take on Northern Brave for the second time in the season. Before defending 135 in the last match, Canterbury had finished with 101 for 8 against Wellington at the Hagley Oval.

Northern Brave are coming into this game with a struggling batting lineup. They’ve got the experienced Chamari Athapaththu opening the innings alongside the skipper while Caitlin Gurrey and Nensi Patel have also shown great promise in the middle order.

Canterbury Magicians Preview

Canterbury pack a strong punch with their overall squad. They lack consistency with both bat and ball. Their recent win came after two consecutive losses where both batters and bowlers failed to deliver.

Indian all-rounder Shikha Pandey rose to the occasion with an unbeaten 41 off 29 balls at number 5 to lead Canterbury Women to a competitive total against the Central Districts.

Kate Anderson also played an impressive knock in the last match. There aren’t many many in-form and consistent players to rely on in this side. Izzy Sharp and Abigale Gerken are key players to watch out for in the middle order.

Sharp scored a fifty against Wellington while chasing 172 runs in a losing cause. Skipper Lea Tahuhu will be happy with her team’s bowling performance in the recent match where bowled out the opposition for just 92 runs.

Shikha Pandey, Melissa Banks, and Sarah Asmussen were the top bowlers for the Magicians in the win. It was a much-needed performance for Canterbury Women who failed to pick a single wicket in the previous match and had conceded 172 for 3 before that.

The hosts will be confident after an all-round performance that led them to a 45-run win to keep them alive in the race to playoffs. While there may not be any reliable batters in the side, there is a lot of potential in this lineup.

Canterbury Magicians Predicted Playing XI:

Kate Anderson, Jodie Dean, Abigail Gerken, Izzy Sharp, Shikha Pandey, Natalie Cox, Kate Ebrahim, Lea Tahuhu (c), Melissa Banks, Laura Hughes (wk), Sarah Asmussen

Northern Brave Preview

Northern Brave aren’t in good form with two losses from three games. One of these losses came against Canterbury while defending a 138-run total at Hamilton. In the next game, they finished with 127 for 8 batting first against Otago whom they had recently outplayed at an away venue.

Skipper Jess Watkin, Chamari Athapaththu, and number 3 batter Caitlin Gurrey led the side to a comfortable 7-wicket win over Otago Women in Dunedin while chasing a 111-run target.

Opening batters Watkin and Athapaththu have been inconsistent since then. Though Gurrey and Nensi Patel fought back after early wickets in their previous encounter against Canterbury, it wasn’t enough to put the team in a competitive position.

Amanda Jade-Wellington delivered a great finish in that game but failed to put any pressure on the opposition with her leg-break bowling. There is some depth to this lineup with Marina Lamplough and wicket-keeper batter Holly Top in the lower middle order.

However, we don’t have confidence in their lower-order batters and reckon that most of the run-scoring responsibilities will lie with the top 4 batters. Athapaththu also plays a key role with the ball along with Marama Downes and Nensi Patel.

These are the consistent wicket-takers in this squad and will be the ones to watch out for against an inconsistent Canterbury batting lineup.

Northern Brave Predicted Playing XI:

Jess Watkin (c), Chamari Athapaththu, Caitlin Gurrey, Sam Curtis, Nensi Patel, Marina Lamplough, Holly Top (wk), Carol Agafili, Jesse Prasad, Marama Downes, Shriya Naidu

Weather Conditions

We expect cloudy skies in Christchurch on the match day with a high of 20 degrees Celsius. There shouldn’t be any rain around the time of the match and we can hope for an uninterrupted T20 match between these two sides.

CM-W vs NBW-W Pitch Report

It has been a balanced pitch in the past where batters could post a good score but lately, the wicket has tilted in favor of the bowlers, making life difficult for the batters. The average 1st innings score in the last 10 T20s here is 137 runs. We reckon anything over 145-150 in this match will be a match-winning total on this ground in Christchurch.

Toss: To Bat

Teams batting first have won 2 of the 4 matches played at this venue in Women’s Super Smash 2024-25. Though neither team has a reliable batting lineup to set a competitive total, they aren’t in good shape to chase down a target either. We reckon batting first and having runs on the board will be a winning strategy.

It will be a close contest between these two teams. There is a lot of potential in the bowling department of both squads. However, the hosts have the momentum on their side with their recent win and will have a slight edge in our match prediction. Canterbury Magicians start as our favorites to win.
