The second qualifier of the International League T20 will be played between Dubai Capitals and current champions Gulf Giants. Dubai Capitals are on the right side of momentum, winning 3 games on the trot.
After a nervy last ball victory over Vipers in their penultimate match of the round robin stages, the Capitals finished their regular season on a high -- with a comfortable 19-run victory over table toppers MI Emirates. Carrying that form and confidence into the eliminator, they blew away a circumspect and below-par Abu Dhabi Knight Riders to pick up a 85-run win.
The same can’t be said about the reigning champs Gujarat Giants though. Yes, they did scrape through to a 3-run win and a 5-run win in the last two matches of their group stages, but MI Emirates sussed them out in the first qualifier. But for a late order cameo from Chris Jordan, the Giants would have been skittled out for under 100 and lost by a huge margin.

The confidence of Dubai Capitals should be sky high after three successive wins, two of which were very very convincing. They had a point to prove against the Knight Riders in the eliminator, and they did so comfortably. In the Eliminator, The Knight Riders won toss and elected to field, hoping they can restrict Capitals to a par score. But the Capitals batsmen were not going to comply.
Despite losing two quick wickets ( Max Holden and Leus de Plooy on single digits), the Capitals had a big total in sight. Englishmen Tom Banton and Tom Abell gave the Dubai team a solid base to launch from with a crisp 63 run partnership. With Banton gone, captain Sam Billings came to the middle and steered the ship to safety, forging two key partnerships with Abell and Sikandar Raza. 189 proved beyond the Knight Riders reach from the get-go, as they lost 4 wickets for 29 runs inside the power play. Kiwi Scott Kuggeleijn breathed fire with the ball early on, removing three of them.
He was ably ed by Sikandar Raza and Zahir Khan, who picked up two wickets apiece. The match was well but over in the 13th over, when the Knight Riders were teetering at 7 for 79. But a rearguard effort from David Willey brought the margin of defeat to under 100.

Gulf Giants had a night to forget against the MI Emirates. They bowled to plans, kept the pressure on the opposition batsmen, and struck regularly with the ball to ensure the power-packed MI batting line up couldn’t get away to a daunting total. 163 is all they conceded with the ball, thanks to a brilliant spell of bowling from Aussie Daniel Worall who came straight into the XI after a title triumph with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape over at Cape Town a few days ago.
Blessing Muzarabani came away with two wickets and bowled economically too. None of the other bowlers, except youngster Zuhaib Zubair, could eke out a wicket. Nevertheless, 164 from 20 overs is a total that most teams fancy themselves chasing, given the amount of depth that the Giants had in the batting lineup. But the Giants got off to an awful start with the bat.
They lost captain and leading run scorer James Vince the very first ball, and they never quite recovered from that early loss. The Emirates bowlers came hard at them, chipping away with the wickets. And the match was done and dusted inside the 13th over when Usman Khan went back to the hut after a scratchy 26. They’ve a lot of work to do with the bat if they want to chase down above par score in the matches to come.
James Vince (c), Jordan Cox, Shimron Hetmyer, Jamie Smith (wk), Usman Khan, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Chris Jordan, Zuhaib Zubair, Daniel Worrall, Blessing Muzarabani.

Runs have been hard to come by on the Sharjah wickets this season. Teams have struggled to put up or chase down any total above 170. The forecast is good for the match, with no threat of rain stopping the play.

High TurnThis knockout game will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Oddly, given the dimensions of the ground, this has been a low-scoring venue in this season. Sharjah Warriors, the home team, was bowled out under 80 twice, and the contender in this match Dubai Capitals was bundled out for 104 in a game.
Of the 7 matches that happened at this venue, the team batting first defended their score successfully 3 times. In one of those instances, the chasing team came very close, losing by just 7 runs. There’s a definite advantage to teams chasing a total here. And win toss and field first should be a default decision here.
Dubai Capitals are on a bit of a roll. But Gulf Giants would be a tough challenge. With Daniel Worrall coming in, they have an excellent bowling unit at their disposal but it’s just that their batting effort in the qualifier 1 was poor. But our money is on the Giants for this match.
We are backing Gulf Giants as the winners of this contest.
