It’s a new season. And Derbyshire Falcons are all set to face off Leicestershire Foxes in another edition of T20 Blast.
The season opener didn’t go the Falcons way, as they went down fighting to Northamptonshire in Northampton. Yet, the Falcons head into the match with their tails up, boasting a superior record over the Leicestershire Foxes in recent encounters.
They’ve secured four straight victories and secured eight wins from their last 10 clashes against Leicestershire. A winning streak like this often gives teams a great boost in confidence and there’s no doubt that Falcons will come into this encounter riding high on confidence. The men from Leicestershire will however be keen on turning the tables.
Bringing Derbyshire’s winning streak to a halt with a solid performance at Edgbaston will be some way to kick off this year’s campaign for the Foxes.

The Falcons, having put 162 on board, ran Northamptonshire close and took the game deep till the last ball, but lost it eventually. A losing start to the season against Northamptonshire Steelbacks might not be the ideal way to kick off their campaign, but the Derbyshire Falcons head into this encounter brimming with confidence.
A remarkable recent record against Leicestershire , winning four matches on the trot and eight out of the last ten, will give Derbyshire Falcons the much-needed confidence to get back into winning ways. A solid top order acts as the engine room of the Derbyshire’s batting group, with Luis Reece, David Lloyd and veteran Wayne Madsen displaying their T20 batting credentials.
What’s striking is that the consistency with which Madsen, who’s into his fifteenth season, scores. 4126 runs from 152 games, with 2 hundreds and 28 fifties, Madsen has been a stalwart for Derbyshire over the years. On the bowling front, Zak Chapell, the leading wicket taker for the Falcons, is solid as ever. But the inclusion of Pat Brown, who played for Worcestershire last season, and Kiwi express seamer Blair Tickner has bolstered their pace attack.
Alex Thomson and new white ball captain Samit Patel are more than handy spinners and can trouble opposition batsmen in helpful conditions.

Leicestershire look a bit undercooked this season, with only three players with international caps namely Peter Handscomb, Wiaan Mulder and Rehan Ahmed. Rishi Patel will be expected to repeat his heroics at the top order this season, too. The team needs big starts from him because Peter Handscomb, the captain, hasn’t had much opportunities come his way in the T20 format including the BBL. And it won’t be surprising if he stutters and stumbles before gathering his pace in this format.
Wiaan Mulder, the Protea all-rounder, had a great SA20 and impressed with both bat and ball. His middle order contribution was very crucial in helping his team progress through to the business end. He’d be hoping to have a similar impact for Leicestershire Foxes in this year’s Blast as well. Rehan Ahmed, the young leggie who made it to the national side last year, will also be a key player for the Foxes this season.
A poor season last year saw him take just 9 wickets from 12 games, but he’d be eager to turn around the tables this year. With Callum Parksinson leaving the club for Durham, there bowling attack has to be built up from the ground but there are some good names such as Ben Mike in there who can give you four overs and make some useful runs coming down the order.

The Edgbaston deck, known for its flat nature and good bounce, has developed a bit of reputation to be batsman friendly. With the forecast clear for the day, expect a high-scoring encounter with batsmen taking full toll of helpful conditions on offer here.
The match will be held at Edgbaston, Birmingham—a neutral venue. This is the first time these two teams will face off at this venue, adding to the interest.
The pitch stays flat thgroughout and doesn’t slow down as the match wears on, which takes out toss from the equation. Winning the toss and posting a huge total is the right thing to do on a high-scoring venue and both teams will be looking to having a bat first if they get the opportunity.
Riding a winning streak, Derbyshire Falcons come into the match with their confidence sky-high. They’ll have to quickly shake off their recent defeat against Northamptonshire, but they’ll be up for the challenge. They have a well-balanced squad with the same core group of players that took the field last year. And they’re looking likely to take the win in this encounter.
We are backing Derbyshire Falcons as winners of this contest.
