Chamari Athapaththu took charge in a remarkable all-round performance, initially with the ball and then by scoring a blistering fifty in just 26 balls, helping Sri Lanka clinch their first-ever T20I win over England in an incredibly dominant fashion. The new-look English side was all at sea against Sri Lanka’s bowlers and would like to forget this shambolic performance in a hurry. With the series tied 1-1, the action will now shift to the decider at the County Ground in Derby on September 6.

England Women were completely outdone by Sri Lanka’s bowlers in the second T20I at Chelmsford. After being asked to bat first on a wicket that was doing something early on, England kept losing wickets regularly and were 66-8 at one point. Charlotte Dean’s 34 late down the order took them to 104, but that was still well below par. Sri Lanka then chased the target down in just 13.2 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
After this horror batting show, England will now be looking to their familiar pair of middle-order stalwarts, Heather Knight and Amy Jones, to bail them out in the final match. Knight has scored 181 runs from her last 10 matches at an average of 22.63 and a strike rate of 113. Meanwhile, Jones has collected 158 runs from her last 10 T20I matches at an average of 26.33 and a strike rate of 139.
Danni Wyatt is another player worth backing. The opening batter, despite her failure in the previous game, has scored 278 runs from her last 10 outings at an average of 27.8 and a strike rate of 147.87.
England’s bowlers were surprisingly ineffective in the last T20I, with only spinners Sarah Glenn and Alice Capsey managing to keep a check on the scoring rate. The English fast bowlers were taken to task by Sri Lanka’s batters in Chelmsford and the management. Issy Wong, who was playing for England for the first time this year, looked completely listless. However, she is a quality bowler, and some more game time will help her gain some momentum back.

Sri Lanka have made a strong comeback in this series. Their bowlers were on point and never allowed England’s batter’s to stitch a partnership. Udeshika Prabodhani (2-19 from 3 overs), Inoshi Priyadharshani (2-16 from 4 overs), and Kavisha Dilhari (2-17 from 3 overs) were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors. Inoka Ranaweera, who took 2-25 from 3 overs, is another one who is worth backing. The left-arm spinner has now picked up 12 wickets from her last 10 matches at an economy of 6.57.
In the batting department, skipper Chamari Athapaththu led from the front again with a scintillating 55 off just 31 balls. Her effort effectively sealed the chase. Athapaththu is by far the team’s most in-form batter in recent times, scoring 290 runs from her last 10 matches at an average of 22.63 and a strike rate of 113.
Harshitha Samarawickrama, who remained unbeaten on 30 off 35 balls, should also be backed. She looked steady and comfortable against England’s bowlers, and we are backing her to make a handy contribution in the final T20I.

The deck at the County Ground in Derby is a well-balanced one, with assistance for both batters and bowlers. Like most English venues, seamers will get help here when the ball is new, but once batters see off the first few overs, they will have their opportunity to score runs. If the conditions overhead are too cloudy, though, seamers will get plenty of movement off the air too, making things difficult for batters. Spinners will need to keep their lines tight because batters will try to attack them in the middle overs.
The weather in Derby will be mostly cloudy, but will remain warm and humid.

The average score batting first at the County Ground in Derby in women’s T20Is is 139. The highest total posted here is 176-6 by England Women. Scores over 150 have been achieved six times here in nine T20Is. The team batting first in this match should look to set a target of around 160–170 runs.
The County Ground in Derby usually favors the team batting first. Out of the nine women’s T20Is played here, six have been won by the side batting first. Since the weather is also expected to be clear, the team winning this game is likely to bat first.
England Women would have been shaken up after that performance in the second T20I. However, that doesn’t suddenly make them a bad team. It was a bad day in the office, and it can happen to the best of teams. They have plenty of talent in their ranks, and their batting unit is still pretty strong. They will just need to watch out against Sri Lanka’s quality spin bowlers. What might hurt them again is their underperforming seam bowling attack. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be hoping their skipper fires again and takes them to a memorable series win. We still feel, however, that this English side will get their act together and make a strong comeback in the series decider.
We are backing England Women to win the third and final T20I.
