In their last match, Essex were staring at defeat when Middlesex were cruising at 236-3 while chasing 299. However, some tight bowling and absolute hara-kiri by the Middlesex batters resulted in a 3-run win for Essex.
For Essex, captain Tom Westley stood up again, scoring a superb 80 runs off 90 balls. Charlie Allison’s 70 off 65 balls down the order helped the team post a healthy score. Westley was among the top-scorers of the season last season for the team, and it bodes well for Esex that he is finding his form.
Unfortunately, none of the other batters have made a mark so far for the team. Openers Michael Pepper and Robin Das are young and inexperienced, but have shown patches of brilliance. We reckon one of these will make an impactful contribution in the game.
Essex’s bowling has fared a lot better than their inexperienced batting unit. Aaron Beard has been the standout performer, taking 8 wickets in 4 innings at an economy of 6.70. Beau Webster hasn’t had a good time with his batting so far, but has impressed with his off-spin and has captured 7 wickets at 5.91.

Luck hasn’t been on Yorkshire’s side this season. They lost their first match to Kent by 2 runs, and their next two matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. But they will be confident of turning things around.
Harry Duke, the team’s top-scorer last year with 330 runs, is our batter to watch out for. The opener was dismissed for 31 off 37 balls in the season opener but looked in good touch while he was out in the middle.
Shan Masood is the seasoned captain and the key top order batsman around whom others can play. Will Fraine (328 runs in 8 innings last season at 41) is also expected to play a crucial role in this inexperienced middle order.
Right-arm fast bowler Ben Coad, with insane figures of 3-16 from 10 overs, was the most impressive bowler in Yorkshire’s first match. Matthew Revis (3–57) was also among the wickets. The right-arm seamer was also the team’s second-leading wicket-taker last year, and we are expecting a good performance from him in this all-important clash.

The County Ground in Chelmsford has a well-balanced pitch that is suitable for both batters and bowlers. The pitch tends to be hard and provides decent pace and bounce early on, allowing seamers to extract movement and create issues for the batsmen. The pitch tends to wear down a little as the game moves along, which helps spinners and spinners both a little more during the second half. Batters who can adjust to shifting conditions and establish themselves throughout the opening phase will benefit as the pitch settles down.
The weather in Chelmsford will be pleasant, with times of clouds and sun.
Last season in the Royal London One-Day Cup, the highest total by the team batting first in Chelmsford was 341 by Essex against Glamorgan. In 2021, it was 338-7 by Worcestershire versus Essex. This year, two matches have been played at the venue in the competition, and the team batting first has posted scores of 237 and 298-9, respectively. The team batting first in this match should look to set a target of at least 280-290 runs.
The team batting first has won nine of the last 11 One-Day Cup matches played at the County Ground in Chelmsford. This season, both matches played here have been won by the team batting first. Thus, the toss-winning team is likely to bat first in this match.
Essex has won three of the last five matches against Yorkshire in the One-Day Cup. Both teams have been affected by the Hundred, with many of their regular starters playing in that tournament. Essex’s batting, in particular, has been badly affected, and unless their bowlers produce another terrific display, their inexperienced batters might struggle again. Yorkshire has much better balance in their batting. Their bowling doesn’t look very strong either, but their superior batting unit might help them prevail in this contest.
We are backing Yorkshire as the winners of this contest.
