After a dominating win against Australia, India is now set to take on Afghanistan. The ninth ODI of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 11th October from 2 PM.
India started their World Cup 2023 campaign on a winning note against the five-time champions Australia. Indian spinners shattered the Aussie middle order to restrict them to 199. Keeping Mohammad Shami on the bench proved right for Rohit Sharma as Ravindra Jadeja and company took 6 wickets of Australia. In return, India suffered a massive blow by losing openers on duck. But Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) scored brilliant half-centuries to win the game for India by 6 wickets.
Afghanistan have already lost their first game of the World Cup against Bangladesh by 6 wickets. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 156 runs after their opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 47 runs. Afghanistan failed to tackle Bangladeshi spinners in the middle of the game losing 8 wickets for 44 runs. The Afghani bowlers gave a fiery start by sending both openers within 5 overs. But the spinners couldn’t emulate the success of their rivals.
India and Afghanistan have played their last ODI against each other back in ICC World Cup 2019. To everyone’s surprise, Afghanistan came close to ending India’s unbeaten run in the World Cup by restricting them to 224 in 50 overs. With 12 needed in the last five balls, Mohammad Shami took a hat-trick to help India win the game by 11 runs. He became the 10th bowler to get a hat-trick in the ICC World Cup.
In 3 ODIs, India has 2 wins over Afghanistan including one in the World Cup 2019. One game ended in a tie where Mohammad Shahzad scored a century (124), the only century between the two teams.

India took a massive decision to keep Shami aside. Playing three spinners might be their tournament Strategy. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets for 28 in the game against Australia. He will be the bowler to watch out for. He has 7 wickets against Afghanistan in 2 games. Jaspreet Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will continue leading the pace attack.
India picked Ishan Kishan over injured Shubman Gill. Hopefully, he will be back for the second game. Gill has scored five ODI centuries & the same number of half-centuries this year in 20 matches and is currently ranked second in the ODIs. His inclusion will provide a massive boost to the Indian batting lineup. Virat Kohli played a superb knock of 85 when India were down by three wickets. He put up a partnership of 165 with KL Rahul who remained not out on 97. Kohli’s form makes him the batter to watch out for.
KL Rahul is having a wonderful year. He is averaging 117 in the last 4 games. Since his comeback, Rahul has scored 405 runs in 7 games. Against Afghanistan, India will hardly go down to a stage where he will bat. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be the all-rounders from the Indian side. Though Pandya took just 1 wicket in the first game, He will be a threat to the Afghan bowling unit.
Key Players: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli

Afghanistan continued to struggle in the World Cup by losing wickets to spinners. The lack of bowling depth and poor form of Rashid Khan will be a headache to Jonathan Trott who is yet to find a perfect balance in both departments. Rahamatullah Gurbaz will open the innings with Ibrahim Zadran. Both scored 47 runs for the first wicket in the first game. Gurbaz has 423 runs in 12 games at an average of 35.25. Zadran is Afghanistan’s leading run-scorer this year with 500 runs at an average above 45 - the best among all. He will be the batter to look out for. It will be interesting to see how openers tackle Bumrah and Siraj in the first powerplay.
The lack of batting depth has been Afghanistan’s key problem for over 2 years. Skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi who promoted himself over Najibullah Zadran couldn’t do much in the first game. His batting average against India is 10.5 in two games. Both Rahmat Shah and Zadran also average below 20 against India. But Shah has played some good knocks in recent ODIs. He can play the role of the anchor against India. Mohammad Nabi will be the key batter in the middle for Afghanistan. He has scored 2 half-centuries against India in 3 outings and currently is the leading run-scorer against the opponents. The all-rounder also has 5 wickets in these games.
Another problem Afghanistan needs to handle is the form of Rashid Khan. Khan has 9 wickets in his last 9 ODIs. His economy also has gone higher this year. Fazalhaq Farooqi will be the bowler to watch out for. Farooqi has 16 wickets in 12 games. In 3 games played against India, Afghani bowlers have always produced some battle to give batters something to chase for. In the last two ODIs, they have taken 18 wickets of India which resulted in a tie and a loss by just 11 runs. Hopefully, this bowling unit jumps back from the ashes to give a tough battle to the hosts.
Key Players: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

The weather will be sunny. The temperature will range between 23 and 35. The wind will be flowing from the west at 9-11 kmh. The pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is traditionally known for being batsman-friendly. It often offers good bounce and carries well to the boundary. Spinners can also find assistance as the match progresses, with the pitch tending to wear and crack.
The ninth ODI of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 11th October from 2 PM. The venue has a capacity of 48000 spectators and has hosted 37 Tests, 29 ODIs, & 13 T20Is. In 2014, South Africa have recorded the highest total on the ground (428) against Sri Lanka in the 4th game of this World Cup. They also have the lowest total (99) on the same ground.
In 29 ODIs, the results have the same favor for teams chasing or defending the target. Both sides have won 14 times so far. But in the last 6 games, the teams have defended the target on 5 occasions. The average first innings score in these 6 games was 291. Team winning the toss should bat first.
India have been looked at as the favorite to win this World Cup. On the home ground, it is difficult for any team to tackle them. At Arun Jaitley stadium, they have won 7 of their last 10 games. Besides this, they have an unbeaten record against Afghanistan. The Indian batting line up is so strong for the Afghanistan bowling attack. Shubman Gill is currently ranked second in the ODIs while Virat Kohli has been fantabulous this year. Not to mention that Rohit Sharma is scoring like T20s.
On the other hand, Afghanistan has lost 15 of their 16 ICC ODI World Cup games. The only stat that might give them some hope is India have lost 2 of their last three games at Delhi.
We predict that India will defeat Afghanistan.
