As expected, Australia Women beat India Women in the first ODI at Mumbai to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The world champions put on a clinical show and will be extremely hard to beat in this format. The hosts did put up a pretty solid batting performance, but their bowling attack was no match for the robust Australian batting unit. All eyes will now be on December 30 to see if India can bounce back and square the series.

Choosing to bat on a favorable surface, India faced a lack of stability in their innings, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Despite several batters making promising starts, they succumbed to soft dismissals. However, Jemimah Rodrigues' classy 82 and Pooja Vastrakar's resilient 62 not out at No.9 proved instrumental in India achieving their highest ODI total against Australia.
India missed Smriti Mandhana due to illness, and there’s no official word whether she will be back for the next match.
Harmanpreet Kaur will need to step up and lead from the front. She has a great record against Australia in this format, and we are expecting an impactful knock from her here.
The Indian bowling looked pretty flat in the first ODI. Dew coming in didn’t help matters. Renuka Thakur Singh and Pooja Vastrakar will look to make some early inroads with the new ball. Because, otherwise, if India bowls second, the spinners might not be as effective when dew comes in

Australia's successful chase against India in the opening match in Mumbai was fueled by impressive fifties from Ellyse Perry (75 off 72), Tahlia McGrath (68* off 55), and Phoebe Litchfield (78 off 89). Their contributions guided Australia to achieve the second-highest successful chase in women's ODIs, securing a convincing six-wicket victory. Chasing a challenging target of 283 on the favorable batting surface at the Wankhede Stadium, Australia reached the mark with 21 balls to spare.
Australia's batting unit is too strong. With Perry, McGrath, and Litchfield in form, they don’t have much to worry about. Then there is Beth Mooney (371 runs from the last 10 games at an average of 74.2 and a strike rate of 90) as well, who will be eager to make an impression.
Ashleigh Gardner and Georgia Wareham were the main wicket-takers for Australia in the previous game. Although they went for runs when the wicket eased out a bit, they can still be relied upon to deliver again..

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium tends to favor batters. In the winter months, it tends to get better as the game goes on, and dew in the evening will make things easier for batters. Seam bowlers will get some movement off the pitch when the ball is new, but spinners might struggle when dew sets in.
The weather in Mumbai during the game will be warm during the day and pleasant during the evening.
As we saw in the first game, this is a great venue for batters. A total of around 280-290 should be par here. We can expect another high-scoring contest.
Four of the six women’s ODIs played at the Wankhede Stadium have been won by the chasing side. As we saw in the first ODI, this is a good chasing ground and we reckon the tam winning the toss will field first.
Australia will look to seal the series in the second ODI itself. They are the reigning world champs and look like such an incredibly balanced team. Their batting in particular is really strong, and it will take a special effort from India’s bowlers to stop them on this surface. India’s best chance is to outbat the Aussies as their bowling still has some chinks. However, we reckon Australia Women should be able to get past the home side again.
We are backing Australia Women as the winners of this match.
