Two massive losses - by 264 runs versus Leicestershire and 125 runs versus Lancashire – had made a serious dent in Kent’s season. Fortunately, they have made a strong comeback by defeating Surrey by 87 runs in their last game. After batting first at the Oval, they posted a healthy 330-6 on the board courtesy of brilliant knocks by Daniel Bell-Drummond (65 off 78 balls), skipper Jack Leaning (87 off 94 balls), and Alex Blake (62 off 50 balls). The bowlers then did a fantastic job on a good wicket to bowl Surrey out for 243.
This was a much-needed performance for Kent, as their batting unit had been struggling this season. Now that the top and middle orders have some good runs under their belts, they will be a much more dangerous team.
Ben Compton is the team’s second-highest run getter this year, scoring 147 runs in 4 innings at an average of 37 and a strike rate of 66. He is followed by skipper Leaning with 138 runs in 4 innings at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 91.
Matthew Parkinson has been Kent’s most successful bowler this year, grabbing 7 wickets in just 3 innings at an economy of 6.47. James Bazley (6 wickets in 4 innings at 6.39) and off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri (4 wickets in 3 innings at 5.38) are two other bowlers worth backing.

Middlesex’s season just hasn’t gotten going. They lost their first match of the season to Hampshire despite a pretty good batting performance. Their next game against Surrey was abandoned without a ball being bowled, and they lost their previous game against Essex by just 3 runs. In the match against Essex, Middlesex were cruising at 236-3 in 35 overs while chasing a target of 299 at the County Ground in Chelmsford. However, a dramatic collapse saw them bowled out for 295.
The problem for Middlesex has been their batting, which hasn’t been reliable. The top order has contributed, but the middle and lower middle orders have failed. Skipper Mark Stoneman has led from the front, scoring 116 runs in 2 innings at an average of 58 and a strike rate of 88. His 93 off 97 balls in the previous match was the team’s top score.
Fellow opener Joe Cracknell (112 runs in 2 innings at an average of 56 and a strike rate of 90) has also been among the runs. From the middle-order, one batter who can leave a mark is Ryan Higgins, who has 103 runs in 2 innings so far.
Middlesex’s bowling has revolved around spinners Luke Hollman and Joshua De Caires, who have taken 4 wickets each. Sam Robson hasn’t scored too many runs this season, but has taken 3 wickets with his legbreaks at a healthy economy of 5.89.

The pitch at the Kent County Cricket Ground is a batting beauty. The ball comes on nicely to the bat, allowing batters to score freely. Seam bowlers will get some purchase here early on, as is the case in most English venues. However, if the weather is clear, they are likely to be taken for runs once the shine wears off the new ball.
The weather in Beckenham during the match is expected to be pleasant, with periods of sun and clouds.
In the first match of the season at the Kent County Cricket Ground, Leicestershire amassed a massive 380-5 after batting first against Kent and went on to win the match by a whopping 264 runs. Last year in the One-Day Cup, only one match was played here, where Hampshire scored a colossal 396-5 versus Kent. This clearly indicates this is a high-scoring venue, and the team batting first should look to set a score of at least 330–350 runs.
The last two matches played at the Kent County Cricket Ground in the One-Day Cup have been won by massive margins by the team batting first. With the weather being clear on Sunday, the team winning the toss is likely to bat first.
In the past 7 games against Kent in the One-Day Cup, Middlesex has secured victory in 5 of them. This year, though, they are struggling to perform as a unit. Their top order looks strong, but it’s their underperforming middle-order that has to come to the party. Perhaps this batting-friendly pitch might help them get some momentum. Kent will be confident after their thumping win in the previous game. They are playing at home and will certainly have the edge in this encounter.
Back Kent as the winners of this clash.
