Table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders go head to head with a listless Mumbai Indians side who’re languishing in the bottom of the table.
A few days ago, when the Knight Riders travelled to Wankhede for the away fixture, Mumbai Indians had them in a bit of a bind. But V Iyer and Manish Pandey took them to a decent score before Mitchell Starc breathed fire with a four-wicket haul to complete a 24-run win.
Mumbai Indians are way ahead on the overall head to head with 23 wins to Kolkata Knight Riders’ 10 wins. But 4 of those 10 wins for Knight Riders have come in the most recent 5 matches, with Mumbai managing to win only one encounter.
This is not new between these two teams. Mumbai Indians had dominated Kolkata Knight Riders for a few seasons, winning 12 games and losing just 1.

Punjab Kings completed a humungous chase at Eden Gardens to leave the Kolkata Knight Riders spellbound. Not many teams lose a match after scoring above 250. But KKR did. However, they’ve done well to rebound from that pasting with 3 consecutive victories. The dashing opening pair Phil Salt and Sunil Narine continue to impress, giving their team a strong foundation for a huge score.
The West Indian was in sublime touch against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana stadium, smoking 6 fours and 7 sixes in his 81 runs off 39 balls. Angkrish Raghuvanshi has done decently well in the opportunities he has had so far, and batsmen like Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer have chipped in with useful contributions when the team needed one badly. Andre Russell and Rinku Singh are expected to be a bit more consistent and effective with their finishing skills.
On the bowling front, Varun Chakravarthy has had a few good matches of late. And that has given him the confidence to keep executing his skills without any fear of being taken apart by the opposition.
Sunil Narine, the other spinner, goes about his job nonchalantly. He picks up a wicket or two but hits his line and length consistently which allows him to put pressure on the batsmen through the middle overs and dry up the scoring rate. Starc, with his homing missiles and toe-crushers, is starting to deliver- which is a good sign given the business phase of the tournament is round the corner.
Phil Salt has been on a tear in this year's TATA IPL, particularly at Eden Gardens. He's amassed a staggering 344 runs in just six matches there, smashing three half-centuries. Given his red-hot form and Kolkata track record, we back Phil Salt to score over 25.5 runs today.

Mumbai Indians terrible season this year has been marred with plenty of problems both on and off the field. Whether it is the captaincy saga or the think tank making some bizarre decisions, Mumbai Indians found a way to lose even from winning positions. And that’s not what champion teams like Mumbai Indians do.
It’s hard to reason with their decision to send Piyush Chawla up the order against Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad holding Tim David back or to not bowl their best bowler Bumrah when SRH batsmen were going berserk in Hyderabad.
With Surya Kumar Yadav missing a few matches early on due to fitness issues, the batting felt a little brittle especially in the middle order. Whenever one of the openers or both of them failed, someone from the middle order had to step up and do the repair job, but only Tilak Varma showed some resolve and composure to bat through the middle overs without throwing away his wicket.
Tim David was okay in his role as a finisher, but the rest of the batting group couldn’t quite come to the party. Bowling-wise, barring the Indian pacer Bumrah and the South African Coetzee, the rest of the bowlers have been pretty ordinary. Mumbai Indians have tried 12 different bowlers this season (compared to KKR’s 6), and that explains how far from settled their bowling combinations have been so far in the tournament.

One of the best batting tracks of the IPL, Eden Gardens is a batsmen’s favourite. Several scores over 200 have been scored here this season, and the hosts have done well to stave off the opposition from chasing down the total with some crafty spin and pace bowling. The weather is all set to play out well during the game day, and we’re going to have an uninterrupted match.

High TurnThe match will be played at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After managing a big win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, the hosts now set their sights on outdoing the visitors in all departments.
The pitch at Eden Gardens in Kolkata has been a batsman's paradise this season, with most games turning into high-scoring affairs. The average combined score for the six matches played here is a whopping 410 runs, with four out of the six exceeding the 400-run mark. Expect another run-fest, and we predict the total score to aggregate score to be over 399.5 runs.
Chasing should be the go-to decision at this venue. Other than the four successful chases in this season here, the team batting first managed two close wins – one by 1 run and another by 4 runs. It’s not hard to imagine that these matches could have gone the other way given the fine margin of victory/defeat. Toss winning captain should opt to bat second.
We are backing Kolkata Knight Riders as winners of this contest.
